The Basics

At Venice's best-known local market, stalls stand cheek by jowl hawking familiar seafood as well as local specialties from the Venetian lagoon. Browsing the selection is a great way to get an idea of what's local and fresh before you peruse restaurant menus later in the day.

Many walking tours of Venice include a stroll through the Rialto Market along with stops at Piazza San Marco and the Doge's Palace and a gondola ride. An excellent way to visit is as part of a food tour of the city that combines the market with tastings ofcicchetti, Venetian snacks.

Foodie? In Venice? Do This!
This is a must do tour if you have just few days in Venice book this amazing tour. Ana was a food affeciano that was funny, smart and brought us to food and wine tastings that no tourist would ever find. The pairings were exceptional, food makes your eyes look to the heavens in delight. Ana was the best of the best. When I return to wonderful Venice I will make this my 1st tour and request Ana. Don’t hesitate. There were a total of 5 of us and this was a memory I will cherish. Thank you Ana for creating this memorable experience.

Fish shopping in Rialto and home cooking in Murano
The guide and the fish stands. The variety of fish types was unexpected. It was fun to buy fresh fish and then cook and eat it.

Tasty Rialto Farmers Market Food Tour in Venice with Wine Tasting & Sightseeing
We found this wine and food tour to be a great way to get in the trenches and experience a cross section of foods and wine. Ana, our guide, was the perfect combination of fun and energy to take us around. The portions were generous and the wine was plentiful. All locations were within easy walking distance. It went by quickly and we left with a great memory.

Rialto Market Food and Wine Lunchtime Tour of Venice
The guide was knowledgeable and easy to understand. She really tried to give us a taste and feel of Venice. Some of the food was not to our taste, but the places were friendly and clean and provided us with comfortable accomodations. The pace was easy for us senior citizens.

A thoughtful overview of the Rialto Market and the Cecchetti shops around it. Kristina was our guide and she was passionate but easy to understand. We left with full bellies and smiles on our faces.

Worth every penny! This tour exceeded expectations! Very relaxed, small groups and you get some history off the beaten track and get to see what the locals experience. Rialto Market Food and Wine Lunchtime Tour of Venice
Loved this tour! The food was plentiful,, many variety of tastings and simply amazing. No one was hungry when we were finished. loved the educational portion and although we were 12 people it felt very personalized and there was no rushing through the stops. If you are a foodie like my husband and I, you will not be disappointed. Highly recommend this tour.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • As with any busy outdoor market in Italy, it's a good idea to keep an eye on your valuables.

  • Be sure to bring your camera, as the stalls filled with artful displays of fresh seafood make for great photo opportunities.

  • Tours through the Rialto Market are on foot, so wear comfortable shoes and a sun hat.

  • The Rialto Bridge is essentially a flight of stairs going up and down, so getting to the market from across the canal may be challenging with a wheelchair or stroller. Instead, take vaporetto Line 1, which is wheelchair accessible, to Rialto Mercato.

How to Get There

Cross the Rialto Bridge from the San Marco side of the Grand Canal to San Polo, then turn right and follow the edge of the canal to Campo della Pescaria, the open square where the Erberia (fruit and vegetable market) is located. Beyond that is the Pescheria, the covered fish market.

When to Get There

The Rialto Market is open Tuesday through Saturday, and the stands are usually closed up by lunch. To see them at their most interesting (and to pick up anything you'd like for a picnic lunch), be there in the early morning.

Food Markets in Italy
