The Basics

A sail down the Grand Canal is a trip through centuries of Venetian history, as historic palaces dating from the 13th to the 18th centuries rise out of the water along most of the route. Though stretches of the canal are lined with walkways, many of the important landmarks can be seen only from the water, so a small-group Grand Canal boat tour or combination walking-and-canal tour is by far the best way to go. For a historical tour of the canal, opt for a daytime sightseeing tour so you can see the ornate facades of Venice’s famous palaces. For a romantic journey, choose a moonlit gondola ride. And for a truly Venetian experience, opt for a gondola ride with a serenade!

Profesional, clean and courteous. No one else in the gondola with us, which made it special, romantic. The route was nice. Thanks for the memories.

Private Guided Tour: Venice Gondola Ride Including the Grand Canal
We loved our hour on the gondola. Our guide was terrific. We had a very short time in Venice, and this was our only real tour, and she gave us a very good overview in just an hour. And she was friendly and fun.

Grand Canal boat tour and Murano glass experience with Hotel pick up
Good tour overall Guide gave some history but also knew when to let us enjoy the view. She answered some questions, shared some history. The hotel pickup was prompt and drop off was back at the hotel dock. Great for people who don’t want to be herded along like cattle in a huge group.

Wished we knew that December weather in Venice is mostly foggy lol we can't see anything while riding along the canals but I guess it's still a nice mysterious-like experience and I've checked-off riding the Gondola in Venice off my bucket-list. Just note that only 2 people can sit comfortably on the Gondola facing the front, while the other 2 (if you're doing as a Group) would have to sit on the sides facing each other.

Such a memorable experience! Went at 6pm and saw a beautiful sunset in the Grand Canal. Headphones didn't really work, so I took them out. Fun listening to the gondoliers chat and sing too.

Grand Canal boat tour and Murano glass experience with Hotel pick up
This was a great trip. The Staff were most helpful getting us on and off the boat, as we are older, and certainly needed the assistance. We both love to watch glass being created, and the people at the glass factory were most helpful and considerate.

Was a nice tour. The introduction is great, it would have been cool to hear a bit more about the surrounding buildings when on the gondola but I can't complain much, overall a great experience, can totally recommend when in Venice!

Venice Canal Cruise: 2-Hour Grand Canal and Secret Canals Semi-Private tour
The tour was amazing and just what we were looking for. Nice chance to explore outside of city center and check out other areas. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and extremely friendly. Shared tour but ended up being private as noone else was on the boat. 10/10!

Semi Private Grand Canal 1-Hour Boat Tour
We not only had a comfortable boat to tour in, we had a very nice guide to introduce us to the Grand Canal. It was interesting and educational and fun, in spite of the light rain that fell during the last part of the tour. We all thoroughly enjoyed it. I can recommend it.

Was a good experience overall, felt a little short though. The day we went was really foggy although personally felt more romantic even when sharing it with two other strangers

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Most Grand Canal gondola rides begin or end in St. Mark’s Square, home to St. Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace, and include a few picturesque minor canals along the way.

  • Alongside Rome and Florence as one of the most popular destinations in Italy, Venice can get extremely crowded. To avoid a long wait at the motor launch, book your Venice tour tickets in advance.

  • The palaces along the Grand Canal have architectural styles that span from the Byzantine to the Renaissance, and are best appreciated with an expert tour guide who can explain their history and importance.

  • Note that Venice and the Grand Canal feature a great number of bridges, many of which are not wheelchair accessible.

How to Get There

The Grand Canal snakes its way through the center of Venice from the train station to St. Mark’s Square. All of Venice is pedestrian only, so to get from anywhere in the city to the Grand Canal, you must either walk or take a boat.

The Islands of Venice

Venice is made up of over 100 small islands, so for a different perspective of this unique city on the water, take a boat tour to one of the quieter outlying islands such as Murano, famous for its glassblowing industry; Burano, known for its lace-making artisans; or Torcello, thought to be the first populated island the in Venetian lagoon.
