Casablanca Valley Tours and Activities

With close proximity to the Pacific Ocean and a unique mix of clay and sandy soils, the Casablanca Valley is one of Chile’s top wine-producing regions, despite its relatively new arrival on the scene. The first vines were planted in the mid-1980s—more than 100 years later than some of the country’s other notable wine areas.
The Basics
Enjoy an afternoon in the quaint town of Casablanca, before embarking on a tour of the scenic Casablanca Valley, best known for white wines like sauvignon blanc and chardonnay. Day trips typically do tastings at several wineries. One popular stop is Estancia El Cuadro, whose museum details Chilean wine production and displays original winemaking machinery from the early 1900s. Some travelers combine winery visits with a tour of the coastal city of Viña del Mar.
Things to Know Before You Go
- Take sunglasses and sunscreen—many wineries have outdoor seating and plenty of sunshine.
- Chile’s legal drinking age is 18, but younger visitors are often welcome on winery tours.
How to Get There
Casablanca Valley is located 47 miles (75 kilometers) northwest of Santiago and 25 miles (40 kilometers) southeast of Valparaiso. The region is connected to both cities by bus, but it’s often more convenient to get there as part of a guided wine-tasting tour.
When to Get There
Casablanca Valley wineries are open year-round, but the ideal time to go is between September and June.
Wine Valleys Near Santiago
Besides Casablanca Valley, the Santiago area is home to three other main wine regions, each an easy day trip from the capital. Maipo Valley—probably the most famous in Chile—is known for its French varietals, including cabernet sauvignon. Wine aficionados won’t want to miss a visit to Aconcagua Valley, widely considered to produce some of Chile’s best reds. Farthest afield is Colchagua Valley.
