The Basics

Driving the Transfagarasan Highway is a real Romanian experience that pairs road course navigation with spectacular views, twisting and turning its way through the Carpathian mountain range in central Romania. Multi-day tours between Bucharest and Brasov (home of Dracula’s Castle) often include a spin on this legendary road. It’s also possible to visit on a day trip, stopping at sights such as Balea Lake, Poienari Castle, and Vidraru Dam along the way.

Book Rasvan for This Tour

Private Day Trip True Castles of Vlad Dracula and Transfagarasan Road
We had a great time with our guide, Rasvan. I was the least excited about Transfagarasan Road, but it ended up being the coolest thing, especially the shops on the top of the mountain. Rasvan even arranged for Covid tests for us, since it is required for our flights back to the U.S. We highly recommend this tour.

Small-Group Day trip Transfagarasan road and Poienari Fortress from Brasov
Charlie has been an amazing guide and a fantastic companion for this long and beautiful day! It helped us with some extra-trip organizational issues and has been funny, patient and helpful the whole time. One of the best guides ever! Ah, and the scenery is absolutely breathtaking! We even managed to spot (from a safe distance) 10 bears! Apparently a record! The cherry on top for the perfect day and experience! Absolutely recommended - go with Charlie for a wonderful Transfagarasan experience!

This is a great once in a lifetime experience. Andrei was amazing and so friendly. It was great even for someone with no experience like me. And the scenery breathtaking. We are already thinking about other trips for next year. Andrei recommended some mountain trails I would love to do.

Transfagarasan Highroad Tour from Brasov (warm season)
Florin was an amazing guide. We had asked for a change of itinerary , having as a drop off Sibiu instead of heading back to Brasov and not only did he agree, he gave us options in how to make It work. He also gave us plenty of time in all locations and was insightful and he made the whole trip feel like a real adventure. Can't recommend him enough. Definitely our favourite guide!!!

Small-Group Day trip Transfagarasan road and Poienari Fortress from Brasov
TB, our guide, was very knowledgeable. He explained the history and the significance of each place we visited along the tour. The scenery was really beautiful and he tried his best to make sure we captured the good pictures despite the temperamental weather. The tour was truly amazing. A few suggestion for improvement are: 1. Provide clear itinerary at the beginning of the tour i.e. how long the journey, whether we will have a stop for restroom/lunch etc. 2. Start the tour with a bit of a background at the beginning of the tour and not wait till we reach the first stop to explain. 3. There was a climb of 1460 steps and this was quite a challenge for us. Wish it was made clearer before the climb so that we could have brought water etc. Overall, the trip was really worth it. We truly enjoyed the experience and the drive up the mountains. Highly recommend for everyone with moderate physical activity and who wants to explore more than just the cities in Romania.

4-Day Inside Transylvania & Transfagarasan Tour from Bucharest
We had an amazing honeymoon thanks to Silviu! He was so knowledgeable, kind, attentive, and just overall a great guy. He introduced us to so many amazing traditional Romanian food and drinks from Țuica, Pălincă, and Fetească to Mici and Tochitură. Silviu got us a great guide at Corvin Castle that gave us the full history of the castle and John of Hunedoara. It was like a episode of Game of Thrones (when the writing was good). Silviu says we lucked out with her because they aren’t always around to give tours. One of the benefits of going on the offseason is you really get a more personalized experience. Silviu really tailored the 4 days we spent with him to fit exactly what we wanted. The roads in Romania can be tricky to navigate but Silviu is a great driver and we felt safe the entire time with him. We highly recommend booking this tour and if you’re fortunate enough to get Silviu as your guide, prepare for an amazing adventure.

Small-Group Day trip Transfagarasan road and Poienari Fortress from Brasov
Best tour ever!! Our guide George was really nice and so kind. We saw Transfagarasan even if it was cloudy, foggy and it was snowing. George guided for 7 hours and he was always gentle and funny with us. This tour is awesome and I think it is the only way to see the most beautiful part of Romania and Transylvania. Out of the real world.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • It takes about 2.5 hours to drive the road, but leave plenty of time to stop and take photos, or in case you get stuck behind flocks of sheep and local herders, who share the road with regular traffic.

  • A restaurant and chalet accommodations are available at Balea Lake.

  • It can be chilly in the mountains, even in summer, so bring warm clothing in case you want to get out and take photos.

When to Get There

Because of its high altitude, heavy snowfall renders this road unsafe and it is usually closed from late October until late June. Closures are also possible during the summer months, depending on weather conditions, and it’s not possible to drive the road at night.

Transfagarasan The Facts

Built as a military road in the 1970s, the Transfagarasan Highway is Romania’s second-highest mountain pass, reaching a height of 6,699 feet (2,042 meters). It has more tunnels and viaducts than any other Romanian road, and boasts the longest tunnel—the 2,900-foot (884-meter) Bâlea Tunnel. Because of the many s-curves, hairpin bends, and steep descents, the average speed along the road is around 25 mph (40 kph).
