Mauritshuis

Plein 29, 2511 CS The Hague, The Netherlands

The Basics

With approximately 800 works, the Mauritshuis collection is small in number, but mighty in scale. Home to Johannes Vermeer's celebratedGirl with a Pearl Earring, the intimate space also houses masterpieces such asThe Goldfinch by Fabritius and Rembrant’sThe Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp. An underground foyer connects the Mauritshuis to the Royal Dutch Shell Wing across the street.

The museum is a popular stop on tours of Den Hague and on multi-city tours, which typically also cover Delft or Rotterdam. If you want to learn more about Dutch and Flemish art, consider booking a tour with an art historian guide.

Kinderdijk and The Hague Small-Group Tour with Mauritshuis, Escher or Madurodam
Kinderdijk is not only a wonderfully preserved group of windmills, but you get to go inside them and see what it is like to live in one. There are also mill workers present to explain the workings and history. I enjoyed that the site was authentic and not touristy. Also, the driver pointed out interesting landmarks and history along the entire route, especially in The Hague.

Kinderdijk and The Hague Small-Group Tour with Mauritshuis, Escher or Madurodam
The tour was just the right size. A total of 6 visitors in a Mercedes minivan. The sights were extremely worth seeing, especially through the very knowledgeable eyes and words of our guide. It was rainy and windy most of the day but that didn't bother or minimize our enjoyments of the Delft factory, the Kinderdijk windmills, the fabulous Maritshuis Museum in the Hague or the very intimate sightseeing tour of the Hague.

Excellent trip. The windmills really were something special. There are museum ones you can enter and look around. Plenty of information provided about how they work and their history. The stop and the delft factory was really lovely. It gave a great overview of how it's made and there is absolutely no pressure to buy anything. The tour of the Hague included all the highlights and it was great to see the painting"Girl with a pearl earring". Bram is an excellent guide and really it is he who makes the trip so good. He is very personable and easy going and full of information. He was enthusiastic and really wanted us to have a good trip.
