While visitors to Sydney do have the option to venture into the outback in search of Australia’s natural wonders, the Australian Museum, located in the heart of Sydney’s central business district, makes getting up close with the wild a whole lot easier.
Wander through air-conditioned hallways filled with more than 40,000 artifacts, including examples of rare native minerals and exotic tropical birds. An all-access pass grants entry to even more galleries filled with ancient archaeological wonders and indigenous Australian artifacts. Popular cultural exhibits also delve deep into the nation’s aboriginal roots and link contemporary time to the far off past. Wildlife fans should be sure to check out the quirky Surviving Australia exhibit, which showcases the country’s weird and wild through six distinct sections that illustrate animal adaptation and survival.
The museum is located at the corner of College and William streets across from Hyde Park, opposite St. Mary’s Cathedral. Travelers can take the train to St. James Station, Museum Station or Town Hall Station. The Australian Museum is open daily from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m., and general admission tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for children between the ages of 5 and 15.

I chose a Sunday to go, bad idea. Full of screaming children, Not my idea of a good time. Overall the place is huge! It was amazing to walk through the short time I was there. The variety of different displays was beyond anything I expected. It was just a short walk from my hotel. I would love to go again and choose a day where the children may be in school to truly take the time and stop and read the plaques.

excellent Aboriginis exhibit! That is what we wanted to see. The Australian government finally apologized for its earlier treatment of The Aborigines.
