Stockalper Palace Tours

Stockalper Palace
The grand showpiece of Swiss silk merchant Kaspar Stockalper, Stockalper Palace was one of the most impressive buildings of 17th-century Switzerland. Today, it’s a Swiss National Heritage Site and a popular visitor attraction, presiding over the alpine town of Brig.

The Basics
Guided tours take guests around the historic castle, exploring the cellars, arcades, halls, and small chapel and offering insight into its monumental architecture and historic significance. Entrance to the castle also includes access to the grounds and gardens, as well as an exhibition on the construction of the Simplon Tunnel, which was the longest railway tunnel in the world when it was completed in 1906, leading from Brig through the Alps to Italy.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Guided tours are included in the admission fee.
  • Tours are held in German, but a short introduction is provided in English. English-language tours can be arranged in advance for groups.
  • Some parts of the castle and castle grounds are wheelchair-accessible.

How to Get There

The palace is located in the village of Brig and can be reached on foot from the Old Town—a 5-minute walk. Glacier Express trains stop at the Brig train station, a 10-minute walk from the castle.

When to Get There

The castle is open daily except Mondays, all year round, and guided tours are typically held three times a day. If you’re staying in town, be sure to pass by the castle in the evening hours too—it looks even more striking when illuminated against the night sky.

Riding the Glacier Express

Many visitors to Brig arrive on the Glacier Express, one of Switzerland’s most spectacular train lines. The 180-mile (290-kilometer) railway traverses the Swiss Alps, running all the way from Zermatt to St. Moritz and reaching a height of 6,670 feet (2,033 meters) as it climbs over the Oberalp Pass. Highlights along the way include views of the Rhône and Rhine rivers, the Matterhorn, and Gotthard Pass, with stops in Andermatt, Filisur, and Chur, among other towns.
