Castle Hill, Doune, Perthshire, United Kingdom

The Basics

The best way to independently visit Doune Castle, managed by Historic Environment Scotland, is to prebook your timed entry. An audio tour, narrated by Monty Python star Terry Jones, guides you around the property, revealing tales from the castle’s history and filming anecdotes. Your entry includes access to several rooms, including the great hall and the kitchen, although the interior is mostly empty.

Screen buffs might prefer to visit the caste as part of anOutlander-themed tours from Glasgow and Edinburgh. Or, join a sightseeing tour with included transportation that combines a visit to two castles, Stirling and Duone. Other tours venture into Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park.

We were a group of 11 looking for a one day trip around Edinburgh. The balance between time in the bus and time outside is perfect. The guide was really nice and very interesting. I definitely recommand this tour.

Stirling Castle, Loch Lomond & Whisky Day Trip from Edinburgh
What a fabulous time! Could not have asked for more- what I enjoyed from the start was the fact that this was a small group/ smaller size bus, so we were in and out of every stop with ease. Pickup was a breeze in the center of Old Town. Hands down Best driver and guide ever! I was a solo traveler so I got the honor of copilot, with great views (score!). I learned so much about Scottish history from our guide, the heroes, bravery and even some music as we tested our lungs to some tunes. We saw the beauty of the Kelpies, the Highlands and Loch Lomond, it felt so personal and overall a great time. Stirling Castle is all a castle should be in its glory. I chose the whisky tasting and also got a photo op at Doune castle (aka GoT Winterfell). Whisky did not disappoint. The drive was exciting with all its twists and turns and hills and oh The Hairy Coos!!!! Adorable! Would highly recommend this tour company to anyone visiting- they go above and beyond to make this a memorable time!

Stirling Castle and Whisky Small Group Day Tour from Edinburgh
The entire trip was a blast despite the rain. Alan was wonderful and extremely considerate. I was traveling with my elderly mum who is over 70 and can barely.walk but Alan was very understanding and helpful. His knowledge and the little snippets were interesting and unusual. An excellent tour - must travel by the wee bus at least once when you're in Edinburgh.

Eddie our driver was very knowledgeable and made the time fly by. This is a well priced tour and although all tours seem a bit rushed, this one seems to split the time pretty fair. Stirling castle was amazing, wish we had more rime there. All in all, worth it!

Heart of Scotland tours, specifically our tour guide Graham, did an incredible job of encompassing the culture of Scotland throughout our tour. He was very knowledgeable in Scotland’s history and geography. We could not have asked for a better guide or tour overall!

Tours range from standard distillery tours that include a tasting of 12-year-old whisky to special tours of the old cooperage—now a warehouse for maturing whiskies—where you can taste spirits straight from the cask.
