With its busy fishing port filled with colorful sailing boats, long shingle beach and rows of painted wooden beach huts, Whitstable is a prime example of a traditional English seaside resort, and makes a worthwhile detour for those heading to Canterbury or the White Cliffs of Dover.
Whitstable’s biggest claim to fame is its oysters, which have been harvested in the region since Roman times and are celebrated at the legendary Whitstable Oyster Festival in summer, drawing visitors from all around the country. There’s more to the seafront village than tasty seafood, though - the bohemian town is also home to a burgeoning arts scene; a bunch of great cafes, pubs and restaurants; the 18th-century Whitstable Castle; and the lively Whitstable Harbour Village, where artists, artisans, farmers and fisherman sell their wares along the seafront.
Whitstable is located on the South East coast of England, around 100 km from London.
