The Basics

The collections of the Shanghai Museum are so extensive, visitors would do well to prioritize the sections of interest to them. One highlight is the impressive ancient bronze gallery, featuring the world’s largest collection of ancient Chinese bronze artifacts. Other top galleries include the ancient sculpture gallery, the painting gallery, and the jade gallery.

Admission to the museum is free, but tickets are required; pick up a free ticket on the day of your visit. Many half-day and full-day Shanghai tours include a visit to the museum along with other city highlights such as Yuyuan Garden, the Bund, and Jade Buddha Temple. Some tours include a cruise on the Huangpu River.

Best of Shanghai Day Tour, including Jade Buddha Temple & Bund & Yuyuan Garden
Tom is a good guide. Full of information, dates, facts and figures. We visited the Shanghai Museum, three different temples, a silk factory, the jade and pearl center and a large open air flea market/mall area and the Bund. Every stop is an opportunity to shop, but I really felt it in the silk and jade shops. The shop workers hovering, pointing out sales and making suggestions. The tour group was less than 10 people which was great.

Best of Shanghai Day Tour, including Jade Buddha Temple & Bund & Yuyuan Garden
This was a long day but our guide was knowledgeable and confident. He didn't hurry us and answered all the questions he was asked. We had time for photos and to examine museum exhibits etc for ourselves. We found the trip to the Silk Factory fascinating and the Tea Tasting session was most enjoyable. An excellent lunch was included. We would never have seen all these things by ourselves so totally recommend this tour.

9-Day Small Group Tour to Shanghai - Beijing - Xian - Shanghai
This was a great tour to check off many of the items on our china Bucket list. It included the great wall, the forbidden city, the summer palace, the terracotta soldiers, a high speed train, a river cruise in Shanghai and much more. The guides, hotels and meals were top notch. The tour operator was even able to help us join the group after our flight was delayed and we missed our connection.

shanghai tour one day city tour
My tour guide, Nini, took me to the best places. This included a meal (vegetarian, by my request) at a restaurant that simply blew me away. Another amazing highlight was a trip to the silk factory. It was fascinating and the shopping was simply glorious! We did a lot in the day and she also arranged for me to go to the Water Village the day of my flight out of China, which would otherwise would have been sitting in an airport for hours until my plane began boarding. Also lots of photo ops and a good mix of history and shopping.

5-Day Private Tour to Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou by High Speed Train
The places on the tour were great. There were no stops that felt unnecessary, rushed or made for us to purchase something. Shanghai is amazing and our tour guide William was outstanding. He was very nice and patient in addition to being extremely knowledgable. Spoke English very well. It was a private tour of 8 which included our family of 4 and our friends and their kids (all kids were teens). William gave us plenty of time, picked us up and dropped us off at our hotel (which we paid a little extra for since it was near Disney and not in the city center). The tour did not include the Pearl Tower so recommend you spend time there and in the surrounding area. William up-sold a Cirque show with acrobats that was amazing. Well worth the price paid. He even made an effort to take us to a food location with plenty of local and foreign restaurants. We thoroughly enjoyed this tour. Ask for William!

11-Day Small-Group China Tour: Beijing, Xi'an, Yangtze Cruise and Shanghai
We took the 11 day tour, and had a fabulous time. The guide in Beijing, Eddie, was great, well organized, knowledgeable and helpful. He was with us every step of the tour. The hotels in Bejing and Xi'an were above my expectation, grand lobby, huge room, comfortable beds and fine linens. In Xi'An our guide was Carol, also excellent on the same level with Eddie. Good information provided by her during Terra Cotta warrior tour. We ate lunch in a private persons house and to tell the truth I was not looking forward to that but the experience was great, I recommend it highly. The river cruise was wonderful, the three gorges are spectacular, the first being the absolute best. Staff were attentive, they taught us to play Mahjong, and the food was excellent on board. Included in the cruise was a trip to a side canal, that showed how they used to pull boats through the canal. I enjoyed it very much. I wish there was an extra day in Shanghai, lots to see, not enough time. I recommend this tour, the value was incredible. I don't know how they can offer so much value for the price. Please do not go in June, July and August, it is incredibly hot.

Best of Shanghai Day Tour, including Jade Buddha Temple & Bund & Yuyuan Garden
Very good This tour is a great option to know about some of the main tourist points of Shanghai. The lunch is included in the package of the tour. I was picked up at the hotel in a car with conditioned air, it guides and driver, and at the end of the tour I had the option of to return to the hotel or to leave in the last point of the tour. This was a good option to know Shanghai faster and with information of the places by the guide.

Shanghai Museum’s Unusual Design

The design of the museum is a visual representation of the Chinese concept of a round heaven and a square earth—a round structure on a square base, similar to the design of many ancient buildings. It also reflects the shape of an ancient bronze cooking pot known as a ding, many examples of which are on display in the ancient bronze gallery.
