The Basics

This ancient city is home to an incredible number of ruins in varying states. The site is best explored with a guide who can help shed light on the function and significance of the various structures. Guided tours of the site depart from Istanbul, Izmir, Bodrum, Selçuk, and Kuşadasi.

Travelers who want to avoid the stress of making travel arrangements to Ephesus can take tours from Istanbul, which typically include air transport from Istanbul to Izmir, and ground transfers from Izmir to Ephesus. Many tours combine a visit to Ephesus with a trip to the Virgin Mary's House (Meryemana), a former house turned shrine where it is believed the Virgin Mary spent her last days.

Our tour guide Cigdem Dikentas Vidinel was very knowledgeable of the Greco-Roman history of Ephesus and was able to answer all our questions. She was patient, attentive and pleasant. It was a joy touring Ephesus, lunch and carpet co-operative with her.

Seeing the Library, of course, and the terrace houses. A special treat was meeting the archeologist who was instrumental in excavating the houses. Getting to know our guide, Burac was also a highlight! We highly recommend the personal tour versus the group one from the ship. It was so nice not being rushed!!! Thank you, Burac!!!

What a great tour! We were picked up right on time in a private, comfortable van with our guide, Hakan. He was very knowledgeable and funny and gave us the flexibility to do what we wanted on our tour, with recommendations of course! The meal we had was one of our favorites with a lot of local tastes. It was a great way to see the area all in one day.
Wonderful experience

Ephesus is incredible, and this tour helped us to understand the significance of what we were seeing. Our guide, Ismail, was great and we appreciate that we’re able to experience the area like a local based on his guidance.

Our tour guide, Izzy, was wonderful. He shared lots of great information about the sights and was funny and engaging. The experience in the bus was comfortable and clean. The highlight of the tour was, of course, Ephesus. I could've spent a bit more time in Ephesus and less time at the House of the Virgin Mary and the carpet demonstration. Overall this was an excellent tour and I highly recommend it!

Kusadasi Shore Excursion: Private Tour to Ephesus including Basilica of St John and Temple of Artemis
Absolutely great tour with our guide Emri. He met us at the port as scheduled. Driver was friendly, bus was clean, AC worked great. We circumvented the crowds by taking the tour backwards from the cruise people. Emri new his stuff. Wonderful lunch at Agora. Highly recommend.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Ephesus is a must for history and archaeology buffs.

  • Bring a hat, sunscreen, and ample water as there is little shade at the site.

  • Much of Ephesus has uneven, stone surfaces that can make wheelchair access difficult. It is possible to enter the site via the lower gate and to see some of the ruins, including the Library of Celsus.

Highlights of Ephesus

Perhaps the most emblematic and oft-photographed ruin in Ephesus is the Library of Celsus. Built between AD 110 and AD 135, the library was originally three stories tall. Much of the structure was destroyed during a 10th-century earthquake, though the spectacular facade has been reconstructed. Though the Temple of Artemis is probably Ephesus’ most fabled structure—this colossal marble construction is said to have been more than four times the size of the Parthenon—only a lone column remains standing.
