Barranquilla Tours and Activities

Barranquilla
Barranquilla, Colombia’s fourth-largest city, is also one of its most vibrant. Home to the country's largest port, this industrialized city sits where the Magdalena River meets the Caribbean Sea. The city is most famous for its Carnival, second in size to Rio de Janeiro’s and recognized by UNESCO for its Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The Basics
The birthplace of Shakira knows how to throw a party, but there’s more to this port city by the sea. A destination often overlooked by tourists outside of Mardi Gras season, Barranquilla offers a lively restaurant and nightlight scene, as well as many museums, including Teatro Amira de la Rosa and Museum of Gold. After visiting the city, use it as an economical base for exploring the country’s Caribbean Coast.

Things to Know Before You Go
  • Pack for hot, humid weather throughout the year, and don’t forget to bring sun protection.
  • Pickpocketing can be an issue in Barranquilla, so it’s best to leave your valuables at your hotel.
  • Well-established public transportation in Barranquilla means most visitors will not need to rent a car.
How to Get There
Both domestic and international flights land at Teatro Amira de la Rosa in Barranquilla. Buses connect the city with other destinations across Colombia, including Cartagena, Santa Marta, Medellín, and Bogotá.

When to Get There
Barranquilla Carnaval takes place on the four days leading up to Ash Wednesday each year. Things tend to be quiet outside this season. If you’re not attending the festival, the best time to visit is in the dry season (December to April).

What’s Nearby
Barranquilla is a major hub on Colombia’s Caribbean Coast, and there are a few destinations worth considering as your next stop in the region. Colorful and historic Cartagena de Indias offers a UNESCO-listed Old Town and a famously sensual atmosphere, while Santa Marta serves as the gateway to the beaches of Tayrona National Park.
