9 Family Weekend Getaways in the US
Looking to escape it all? Well … with the kids in tow? Here’s where to head.
It would be hard to visit San Antonio and miss the Tower of the Americas, which looms over the heart of the city. Besides the observation deck and restaurant, there’s also a 4D theater ride, called Skies Over Texas, which takes you on a sensory journey through the state to watch NASA astronauts train at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, attend a local football game, watch horses running in the wild, and visit some of San Antonio’s most important attractions.
The tower is included on just about every local sightseeing tour, and it’s a stop on hop-on hop-off bus tours. Entry to the tower can be added to most of San Antonio’s multi-attraction passes.
Tickets to the tower include unlimited access to the observation deck and the 4D theater.
Outside food and drinks are not permitted in the building.
The Tower of the Americas is fully wheelchair accessible.
The Tower of the Americas is in downtown San Antonio, within easy walking distance of the River Walk. If you’re coming from further away, your best bet is to drive or take a taxi or rideshare as public transportation is limited.
Each attraction within the Tower of the Americas maintains its own hours. The observation deck is open daily throughout the year from late morning until late in the evening, with slightly extended hours on Friday and Saturday nights. The rotating restaurant is open every day for dinner and also serves lunch on weekdays.
The plaza at the base of the Tower of the Americas hosts festivals and special events throughout the year. Stop by to enjoy an outdoor concert or movie screening, take a Zumba class, admire custom autos at a car show, or shop local vendors’ stands on a market day. Check the calendar before your trip to see what’s happening.
