The pristine high-altitude gorges, peaks, deserts, and river valleys of Argentina’s northwestern provinces have earned Salta the reputation as the hub of outdoor adventure. From cloud forest hiking to river rafting, these are some of our favorite outdoor activities.
Hiking and Trekking
Hiking opportunities from Salta are as varied as the region’s diverse landscapes. Travelers might find themselves hiking through the subtropical Yungas cloud forest of San Lorenzo, trekking through the multicolored canyon of Quebrada del Toro (Bull’s Gorge) to ancient Incan ruins, or exploring the caves of Los Cardones National Park.
River Rafting
One of Salta’s most popular outdoor pursuits is river rafting through the scenic Juramento Canyon. These excursions begin at the base of the Cabra Corral Dam and take passengers on a 2- to 3-hour trip through more than two dozen class II and III rapids.
Ziplining
South America’s largest zipline canopy circuit can be found just outside Salta. The series of cables, some as long as 1,900 feet (600 meters) take adventurous travelers on a high-flying journey some 650 feet (200 meters) above the ground.
Sightseeing Safaris
Travelers who want to see as many of Salta’s natural wonders as possible can opt for a sightseeing safari. Options include a day trip along the route of the famous Train to the Clouds as it passes through Bull’s Gorge, a visit to the Salinas Grandes salt lakes, or an excursion into the remote deserts and salt plains of Northern Argentina.
