The Basics

For many travelers to Machu Picchu, hiking the Inca Trail through the Sacred Valley is as much a part of the bucket list experience as seeing the ruins themselves. It typically takes four days to cover the distance between Cusco and Aguas Calientes, with overnights at Huayllabamba, Pacamayo, and Huinay Huayna on the way. Shorter one- or two-day treks are also possible for more inexperienced walkers. To walk the trail, you need to join a group of fellow hikers led by a licensed guide. Trail permits are limited, with only 500 hikers permitted on the trail at any given time (including tour guides and porters), so you'll need to book ahead.

Hi everyone. I just...
Hi everyone. I just finished hiking the Inca Trail (with the most intuitive, helpful, thoughtful and very knowledgeable Guide, Francisco). I'm not in the best shape- (if you want to do this hike YOU SHOULD TRAIN BECAUSE IT'S DIFFICULT) and Francisco was very patient with me, as were my peers from the group (THANK GOD!). The hike was very demanding but Francisco never rushed me, was patient, and KNEW how to manage a group with people that hiked at a faster paste. The chef was INCREDIBLE and the porters were AMAZING. This was such a beautiful trip.. if you want to do this hike, give the hamburgers a break and get your booty out for some walks and hikes. THANK YOU FRANCISCO AND EVERYONE WHO WAS IN THIS GROUP!!!

Inca Trail To Machu Picchu 2-Day | Small Group Service |
Perfect 2 day trip, both days lead by Marcial, who was fantastically kind and loved spreading the knowledge and culture of the local people. The Inca trail was by far the most incredible experience I’ve had and would recommend this because Machu Picchu is incredible, but is extremely busy. This gives a well rounded experience of the Incan empire!

Classic Inca Trail 4 days to Machu Picchu
Absolutely fantastic experience from start to finish. Our guide was a chap called Luiz, he was funny, friendly, knowledgeable and really went out of his way to make sure everything was on track. The porters are absolute hero's and were also great craic and very friendly. I couldn't rate this experience any higher, was amazing. Worth every penny and more.

Overbooked Inca Trek and did Lares Trek instead

4-Day Trek to Machu Picchu Through the Inca Trail
NOTE: we had booked the Inca Trail initially and were later informed that it was sold out (this is not uncommon). We did the 4D/3N Lares Trek instead. This excursion was a dream from start to finish. Francisco our tour guide was so, so, so kind, funny, knowledgeable, and passionate about Inca culture and history, the Andean nature and its people. His English is very good and he is very attentive to everyone’s needs. We spent each night playing cards with him and he didn’t hesitate to go above and beyond to make sure we had a good time. Our chef Benigno cooked some of the best food we had during our 3 week stay in Peru - and that on two tiny camping gas stoves!!! Him and our horseman Luis were a very fun addition to our group and were always cheerful and kind. Both worked extremely hard under tough conditions and we really admired their dedication. In retrospective, we were actually pretty content with doing the Lares instead of the Inca trail. We didn’t see ANY other tourists during our trek and got to sleep in a traditional Andean village one night, which felt very unique. Note that since the reopening of Machu Picchu after the pandemic the rules for walking around the excavation site have become extremely strict and the park rangers will (seemingly randomly) tell you where you can and cannot go. Francisco knew how to navigate the situation and was able to convince the park rangers to let us access a special lookout spot before giving us a very informative and impressive tour through Machu Picchu. If you can, I would strongly suggest requesting Francisco as your tour guide. He was incredible and we would do the tour with him again in a heartbeat.

Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu 2D/1N
The whole experience is amazing. Our guide Luis Chipana spoke excellent English and was extremely knowledgeable. The trek on the first day was incredible, with amazing views throughout and this was done at the pace of our choosing. At the end, you get to see Machu Picchu from the best spot and have as much time as you want to take it all in. The second day involved more viewing spots and actually venturing into Machu Picchu where again, Luis explained in great detail and clarity the various aspects of the site. The lunch and dinner on the first day were also excellent. I couldn’t recommend Luis and the trip itself enough!

4-Day Trek to Machu Picchu Through the Inca Trail
Willie Huayaconza is an awesome guide with a good personality and very educational on the history of the Incan trail. The porters are super men, and the chefs prepare amazing tasting and presentation of meals. No one will go hungry. The trail is challenging, but for those who enjoy taking a break from socialization with a physical challenge, this is for you.

Classic Inca Trail 4 days to Machu Picchu
An amazing experience :) 4 days of varied and beautiful environments with Incan ruins along the way (and at the end of course!) Elisban our guide was very knowledgeable and informative- as well as being funny. Guide Melky also supported well and brought a positive attitude to the group. As for the food, it greatly exceeded expectations - large buffets with high quality meals everyday. Thanks Amilcar and co. Highly recommend. Even the rain didn't dampen the experience

How to Get There

The city of Cusco serves as a base for trekkers heading out on the Inca Trail and is serviced by Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport. Most tours include pickup from Cusco hotels and the bus ride to Km82 along the railway between Cusco and Aguas Calientes, where the hike begins.

When to Get There

The dry season (June to October) brings the best weather and the biggest crowds to the Inca Trail; if you plan to hike during this time, be sure to book months in advance. The spring and fall shoulder seasons—May in particular—see fewer tourists and occasional rain. The winter months are prohibitively wet for most trekkers, and the trail closes for maintenance during February.

Alternatives to the Classic Inca Trail Trek

With the growing popularity of the Inca Trail (and the permit limits placed on it), visitors are considering alternative treks to Machu Picchu. These include the Lares trek, beginning in the town of Lares and finishing at the ruins of Ollantaytambo (a short train ride from Machu Picchu), and the Salkantay route, famous for its diverse scenery.
