Te Puia

Te Puia, Rotorua, New Zealand

The Basics

Admission tickets and guided tours through Te Puia usually include a visit to the Kiwi House for a look at this nocturnal national bird housed in a dark enclosure. In the national weaving and carving schools, you can watch Maori students re-create the traditional arts of their ancestors.

For what is arguably the best evening in Rotorua, come in the evening to experience Te Po—a traditional ceremony andhangi feast (food cooked in a traditional in-ground oven), along with a music and dance performance. Travelers can also visit Te Puia as part of a Rotorua sightseeing tour, an eco tour, or an excursion focused on arts and crafts.

Tauranga Shore Excursion: Te Puia Maori Cultural Centre and Rotorua City Sightseeing
It was the best day. The Te Puia Maori Cultural Centre - the Maori welcome, the show - absolutely wonderful. Walking around the hot springs, visiting the work studios, wood carving etc. excellent. Our tour guide made the experience even better. Rotorua is such a lovely place. Tauranga is beautiful. Thoroughly recommend doing this tour.

Tauranga Shore Excursion: Rotorua Te Puia Geothermals, Maori and Kiwifruit
Our guide, Graeme, was excellent! He is extremely knowledgeable and has such a love and passion for the land, history and culture of the land. He covered everything in good time without sufficient time for us to enjoy all the highlights. We also managed to catch the eruption of the Te Puia geyser which was the icing on the cake.

Tauranga Shore Excursion: Rotorua Wai-O-Tapu Plus Te Puia Geothermals
Alistair gave a great tour of Tauranga and Rotorua area. Stops at Kiwi farms, geysers, hot mud pools and other thermal activity. Spent time at an active Maori village and saw a great show there. Pick up and drop off right at the cruise ship dock.

Fantastic tour albeit a long day. Our driver Michael was a fountain of knowledge and drove very safely. The Waitomo caves were amazing and the commentary by very enthusiastic guides made it fascinating. A great day out.

Tauranga Shore Excursion: Te Puia Maori Cultural Centre and Rotorua City Sightseeing
The tour started and ended on time. The driver was cautious and the itinerary was good. We have to make some adjustments due to street closure. The Maori show as excellent as was the geyser. The Kiwi farm was interesting and Kiwi ice cream tasty. The guide, Jennifer, could have asked us to queue up a bit early for the Maori show so we would get better seats.Only 12 people in a nice van was much better than a large bus tour.

Tauranga Shore Excursion: Rotorua Wai-O-Tapu Plus Te Puia Geothermals
Well organised schedule. Peter was most informative, happy to answer any questions about New Zealand. Ran to a tight schedule, no waiting about for long lunches, this maximised the itinerary. Meeting point easy to find.

Tauranga Shore Excursion: Rotorua Te Puia Geothermals, Maori and Kiwifruit
What a fantastic tour. We learned a lot about the kiwi fruit, tasted various kinds of the fruit and later we learned about the Maori tribe, their customs and dances. Fun tour.

Pohutu the Showstopper

When visitors first catch a glimpse of Pohutu Geyser—which thunders up from the earth and shoots skyward with a column of water that’s nearly 100 feet (30 meters) high—they begin to understand why this geothermal attraction has drawn people for centuries. You can witness the eruption of the Southern Hemisphere's largest active geyser day or night.
