Trastevere

Rome, Province of Rome, 00153

The Basics

Many of Trastevere’s narrow streets are closed to traffic, so the best way to explore this ancient Roman neighborhood is by getting off the beaten path with a guided walking tour—though Vespa scooter and Segway tours are also fun options. Trastevere is famous for its excellent cuisine, so consider taking a food tour to discover traditional Roman dishes, Italian wines, and open-air food markets. Alternatively, tour after dark to rub elbows with young Romans out for a night on the town.

A history of Rome through food
Just a great experience. Our guide Daniela was wonderful, truly knowledgeable and really excited to tell us about the history of Rome and the local good scene. The food was spectacular, but Daniela’s obvious friendship with the local vendors snd restaurant owners made it even more special. I would have posted more food pictures but we were so caught up in conversation and tasting the food I forgot to take pictures 😀 I highly recommend this your to anyone wanting to have a true Roman food experience.

Private Tour - Trastevere and Villa Farnesina
Excellent tour of Trastevere and Villa Farnesina. Vincenzo was incredibly knowledgeable about art and architecture and showed / told me many things I could not have done on my own. His passion for the topics was also irreplaceable and would definitely recommend this tour!

Budget-friendly Street Food Tour of Trastevere Quarter Smaller Group
This tour was excellent. We visited Tiber Island and the Trastevere Quarter and tasted so many different Roman foods. We would never have gone to this area of Rome if we had not selected this tour. We were able to see how Romans live and not just the main attractions of Rome. Our tour guide was outstanding and it was so much fun walking though the quarter with her. I highly recommend this tour.

Small-Group Rome Food Walking Tour: Trastevere, Campo de' Fiori, Jewish Ghetto
Awesome experience! Would do this again and would definitely recommend. Our guide Anastasia was amazing and very helpful during the tour and with other recommendations for our stay in Tome. The places we visited during the tour were local places and we tried some amazing food that wasn’t very touristy. You will not be hungry after!

Small-Group Rome Food Walking Tour: Trastevere, Campo de' Fiori, Jewish Ghetto
Daniela was the best tour guide! She was engaging and fun and very informative. The food was excellent and such a great introduction to Roman cuisine, since it was our first night here. She was also kind enough to follow up with an email after our tour with restaurant recommendations.

Jewish Ghetto and Trastevere Tour Rome
This was a great tour-the best we experienced in Rome and perhaps the best we have had anywhere. I suppose any tour guide, with the right background of information and a decent understanding of the language of the participants could make this quite Ok, but Carolina was just an amazing person to be with. She was so friendly and personable that we felt honored to be with her. I would recommend this to anyone!

Rome Trastevere and Villa Farnesina PRIVATE Walking Tour
We went to this tour to see the Raphael's frescoes. And we loved our tour and our guide Francesca. We met across the Tiber on "Old banks" street where the story starts. She told such a fascinating story, I think we spent the whole excursion with our mouths wide open. The villa itself is beautiful. I highly recommend the tour and especially Francesca as a guide

When to Get There

Trastevere is delightful to explore all year round, though the neighborhood is best appreciated when the weather is mild. For a unique look into one of the most lively neighborhoods in the Eternal City, take a leisurely stroll by night. Like much of Rome, the area gets crowded in summer.

Caravaggio in Trastevere

In the early 17th century, Caravaggio was commissioned to paint “The Death of the Virgin” for the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Scala in Trastevere. The master painter’s realistic depiction of the Virgin as swollen and bare-legged was considered blasphemous, and the parish rejected his work. It now hangs in the Louvre in Paris.
