Valley of the Butterflies (Petaloudes)

The Basics

Attracted by the humidity and scent of the Oriental Sweetgum trees, butterflies flock to the valley near the end of their life cycle to reproduce. A small museum there features a butterfly hatchery and exhibits. Many guided tours around the island of Rhodes stop by the Valley of the Butterflies, often in conjunction with a wine tasting, a visit to the Kallithea thermal springs, or a boat trip to the uninhabited island of Halki.

Great trip!
The driver picked us up at our hotel exactly at the time stated. The minibus was really comfortable and air conditioned! There was plenty of time at each stop to do everything without feeling rushed. Would definitely recommend!

Butterflies Valley & Wine Tasting Experience Private Tour
We were picked up by Alexis who was the perfect guide. He was extremely personable and had a vast knowledge of the island making this a day of fun and adventure. We then went to do our wine tasting. It was a small family owned winery so it was great to have Jason, who is the 3rd generation winemaker, take us around and explain the vineyards and winemaking process. After that we went to Butterfly Valley. This is a once in a lifetime breathtaking experience. I have never seen anything like it before. Lunch was on the Windward side of the island where we could watch people kite surfing. The lunch was outstanding consisting of a variety of authentic Greek dishes. I would definitely recommend this tour.

Butterflies Valley & Wine Tasting Experience Private Tour
To be honest, superb experience. It’s difficult to really give feedback on this one adventure. After our day of butterfly and wine, we continued with this tour company for the majority of our vacation (doing 2 other tours!) Our tour guide, Alex and his colleague Visilius were fantastic, friendly and very helpful. This is really the first tour company where I found myself really feeling like I was with friends! We loved our time and carried on with 2 other excursions. They give lots of options and ideas! If you’re looking for a personalized tour, considering your wants/needs... you can’t go any further!

Ok but timings need looking at

The minibus driver was a gorgeous greek man. I spent lots of time looking at him lol the Monestary was ok but we didn't go in as only 30 minutes left and 6 euros each it didn't seem good value. The best bit was walking up to the large cross and seeing all the peacocks. Butterfly valley was ok but too early for Butterfly's so reduced entry. We went June 13th. Nice walks and cafe. A nice half day out. Too much time at butterfly valley and not enough at Monestary.

Two very beautiful places to visit at any time of the year. We were only there for a few hours but we will definitely be returning on our next trip to Rhodes. Highly recommended.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • As you wander the pathways, try not to disturb the butterflies—they’re trying to conserve energy.

  • Wear sturdy shoes, as the valley has lots of stairs, bridges, and uneven terrain.

When to Get There

The best time to see the butterflies is during the dry season, from the end of May through the end of August. Go in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat. Outside of butterfly season, the area is still worth visiting for its scenic trails.
