The Basics

While most visitors come to the Middle of the World for a photo op with one foot in either hemisphere, there’s more to this day-trip destination than just a painted line. The 98-foot stone obelisk, which contains an Ethnographic Museum, is surrounded by a replica of a traditional Amazon village. Visitors will also find a small planetarium, a scale model of colonial-era Quito, a Craft Beer Museum, and Cocoa Museum, all on-site. Many Quito sightseeing tours include a visit to the Middle of the World Monument, but you can also combine your visit with some shopping at the Otavalo craft market or a Pululahua Volcano hike.

Great way to see the highlights of Quito
Diego, my guide from Latin Adventures, did a wonderful job of explaining the history and architecture. He was able to answer all of my questions.

Okay, but not really worth the amount they are asking.

Christian was a great guide. Unfortunately, I felt I was a bit shorted and taken advantage of by the trip. I signed up and paid and then because I was the only person on the tour I was told I had to pay $55 more for a private tour. Additionally, I wasn't taken to a few places on the itinerary and when I asked about it they said that would take up more time and cost me more money.

The tour guide was excellent and we had an amazing time. It did run on for about 7 hours but it was worth it just for the tour guide.

Diego was our guide. He arrived at our door early. He was very knowledgeable and laid back. The restaurant he took us to for lunch ( not included) was delicious. He went above and beyond what was listed on the tour description. We wanted to buy good chocolate so he took us to a quaint shop where we had a private chocolate tasting. It was a first great day in Quito.

Half-Day Tour to Mitad del Mundo Complex- All entrances included!
Our tour guide Oscar and driver Bolivar arrived at our hotel on time and took us up through the hills of Quito all the while explaining the city history and culture, answering our questions along the way. We stopped at a park to view a village of people living inside a volcano crater followed by an amazing time Learning about the culture and people of Equidor at the museum then to Mitad del Mundo. We wanted to see more of the city, so they dropped us off at Old town so that we could walk through the city and provided us with an excellent lunch recommendation. It was a great time!

Private tour to one of the world's most fun tourist sites

Mitad del Mundo and Teleferico Private tour
Fun and information private tour to one of the world's great tourist sites: the Mitad Del Mundo. The guide, Daniel, is knowledgeable and keeps the tour interesting. He'll also take you to the real equator, and not just the pseudo-equator where the monument stands. (The monument is where the French Geodesic Mission measured the location to be, using the absolutely best available technology from the early 18th Century. The fact that they got to within 200 meters (or so) of the actual equator is absolutely amazing and commendable, and not something to be poke fun at.) He also does bird-watching tours if you are into that thing. And he can pick you up at more hotels than just the few listed on the web page. Just ask.

Definitely recommend this tour! It was a solo tour for me (on the more expensive side), but on the plus side it was customized to my whim. The tour guide Oscar was very knowledgeable and friendly.

Equator and Telerifico Tour

Mitad del Mundo and Teleferico Private tour
Went on this tour with Daniel. There were 9 of us, and we had a comfortable van all to ourselves with plenty of room. He was flexible with pick up and drop off. He walked us through everything at the equator and then went on the telerifico, which had amazing views. Timed it right so that we were able to see the sunset above the clouds (13,000ft above sea level) with time to enjoy a coca tea. One suggestion would be to speed up the “tour” portion at the equator to allow for more time for shopping, etc. (we only had 20 minutes). Overall great experience and I’d recommend this for an afternoon/evening tour while in Quito!

When to Get There

The monument is open daily from 9am to 6pm. The site is predictably crowded during the high season (June–September), so if you want a solo photo op, come first thing in the morning or at the end of the day. On weekends, locals hang out at the monument and the area comes alive with folk music and dance shows.

The*Real* Middle of the World

Technology has come a long way since 1736, and modern GPS satellite technology has placed the real equatorial line about 980 feet (300 meters) north of the present-day monument. To visit the real equatorial line, check it out on your GPS-enabled device and head to the nearby Intiñan Solar Museum, which is five minutes away by car.
