Marietas Islands (Islas Marietas)

Marietas Islands, Mexico

The Basics

The islands are a haven for creatures such as dolphins, manta rays, humpback whales, sea turtles, and blue-footed boobies. Boat tours allow you to see the wildlife, but visitors are only allowed to set foot on one area of the government-protected islands, a strip of sand dubbed the Hidden Beach. Snorkeling and scuba diving tours from Sayulita and Puerto Vallarta are the most popular ways to experience the islands and their coral reef, while whale-watching tours also run in winter.

Marietas Islands Snorkel & Hidden Beach
The tour guides are very attentive and always make sure no one is left behind. The hidden beach is very pretty, it's small but getting there is the experience I would not want to miss! It does require a bit of swimming but, again, the tour guys go with you and always keep an eye on everyone, helping if needed.

Marietas Islands snorkeling & hidden beach with restriction
We went in a small group which was nice we got to see the hidden beach! Then we snorkeled and saw pretty fish, waves were a little bumpy so I recommend medicine if you get sea sick.

Marietas Islands: Snorkel Cruise from Puerto Vallarta
We were luckily aboard Boat 4 and the entire crew was amazing. Dante is a 'dreamboat' himself and his positive energy is infectious. We enjoyed all the activities to the fullest and our cheeks were sore from smiling all day. The private beach stop was a highlight for us and allowed our group to relax, swim and explore the adorable hidden treasure. Lunch was yummy, the open bar much appreciated and the happy vibe of the crew made for a perfect excursion.

Marietas Islands snorkeling & hidden beach with restriction
We enjoyed this excursion very much! The tour operator and boat captain were fantastic. We saw some dolphins and sea turtles on our way to the island so that was a bonus. Swimming to the island from the boat was challenging but well worth it to see the hidden beach! The snorkeling was fun and we got to see a baby nurse shark as well as other beautiful fish. The blue footed boobies on the other islands and other sea birds were wonderful to see as well. Thank you for the staff for a wonderful experience.

Great excursion

Marietas Islands Snorkel Cruise from Puerto Vallarta All Inclusive
This is a great excursion to take if you have time. It takes about and hour and 45min. To go and from the Marieta Islands. We did see plenty of fish while snorkeling and did not pay extra for the private beach. A couple that did pay said they did not see any fish. While snorkeling the crew took care of us and took pictures of us through the experience, the cost for the pictures is 650 pesos which is equivalent to 36 dollars at the current rate (18pesos). There was Kayaks and paddle boards available to everyone and my friend that went with me didn’t know how to swim but with the life vest she felt safe. Definitely a great experience.

Conservation in the Marietas Islands

The Marietas Islands are an MAB Biosphere Reserve, meaning they are part of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere program to improve the relationship between humans and the environment. Because the islands have become increasingly popular, causing interference and possible damage to the ecosystem, the Mexican government authority known as the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP) has closed the islands to the public in the past. Efforts may be made to prevent future damage in a variety of ways, so enjoy visiting while you can and keep in mind the fragile nature of this important ecological environment.
