_Management Photo_TA_UGC.jpg)
At the Epic Discovery Memorial (Memorial da Epopeia do Descobrimento), visitors can learn about the history of Portuguese colonizers in Brazil. The monument features a life-size replica of a Portuguese ship and also contains botanical gardens and exhibits about the history of Brazil.
The Basics
Built on the seafront, the Epic Discovery Monument is made up of a life-size replica of Nau Capitânia, the vessel that brought Pedro Álvares Cabral and his crew to Brazil. There is also a museum, where the story of Brazil’s colonization is told through documents and artifacts.
Take a tour with the museum’s guides—who are all descendants of Pataxó Indians—to learn about the colonization of the land and about the native species found on the trail. You can also visit a replica of a Hollow, a typical style of Pataxó lodging.

When to Get There
The memorial is open Tuesdays through Sundays, from early morning through early evening with a break for lunch. Last admission is 30 minutes before closing. Expect to spend between 1–2 hours exploring the site.
