Penguin Parade

The Basics

Watching the nightly Penguin Parade is a popular pastime. There are three self-guided viewing options available: general viewing, which allows access to the viewing stand overlooking the beach; the penguins-plus viewing area, which offers a much closer look at the penguins; and the underground viewing area, which lets you view the penguins at eye level. Guided Penguin Parade tours offer greater insight into the penguins and their daily routine.

Many Phillip Island tours and day trips from Melbourne include entrance to the Penguin Parade, often alongside other island attractions such as the Nobbies, the Phillip Island Wildlife Park, or Churchill Island.

An absolute must do. Our guides Cloe and Eric were fabulous and helped make the day extra special. I would recommend taking the opportunity to visit the little penguins and enjoy them in natural habitat.

The penguins were really cute and tour guide was friendly! Happy to see some koalas though there weren’t that many. Overall experience was great though the bus was a tad small and squeezy

Phillip Island Penguin, Brighton Beach, Moonlit Sanctuary from Melbourne
The tour was fun and the guide knowledgable. It did feel rushed at times, but it was for a good reason. The purpose of the tour is to see the penguins and getting there early is key to getting a good spot and enjoying the penguin center. I would pay extra to get the Plus or Underground viewing, you get really up close and personal. The animal sanctuary was OK. I would have done the evening penguin parade tour only, but it is not operating at the moment.

Phillip Island Penguin and Koala Highlights Day-Trip from Melbourne
Our tour guide Madge was very friendly and knowledgeable about the Koalas and the history of Philip Islands! We went on a Saturday and it was surprisingly quiet with little people and we were able to see the Koalas up close! Very happy that we went on this tour as we also got to see the Grand Prix race track and some beautiful coastal sights before heading down to Penguin Parade to see the penguins at sunset! It was a great day that was well spent and I would definitely recommend it to everyone, the pick-up and drop-off aspect was also really convenient! Great tour and hope more people will sign up for it, thanks so much for a great day at Philip Islands!

Phillip Island Penguin Parade Day Trip with Koala Conservation Reserve Visit
The penguins were fascinating to watch, the scenery was beautiful, and the weather was perfect. We enjoyed walking on the beach and visiting the wildlife park. As we are above average in size, the bus seats were not as comfortable as I had hoped for a long trip of 12 hours.

How to Get There

The Penguin Parade takes place at Summerland Beach on Phillip Island, 87 miles (140 kilometers) south of Melbourne, off the Mornington Peninsula. Once on the island, it’s a 20-minute drive to Summerland Beach, depending on traffic. The site is easy to find, off the C473 road and close to the Nobbies. There's no public transport to the beach, so if you don’t have your own car, it’s best to join a tour.

Wildlife Experiences on Phillip Island

Animal lovers will find plenty of wildlife-watching opportunities around Phillip Island. Head to the Koala Conservation Centre to spot koalas, wallabies, and echidnas free-roaming in natural bushlands; admire Australia’s largest colony of fur seals at Seal Rocks; or set sail on a whale-watching cruise from Cowes Jetty (May–October only). You can also spot Aussie animals such as kangaroos, wombats, dingoes, and Tasmanian devils at the Moonlit Sanctuary Wildlife Park or meet farmyard animals and watch sheepshearing demonstrations at the Churchill Island Heritage Farm.
