LaLaurie Mansion Tours - page 2

star-5
2 Reviews
LaLaurie Mansion
LaLaurie Mansion is not your regular tourist attraction. Also known as LaLaurie House, this French Quarter spot has a gruesome past involving torture, murder, and acts of brutality. The house is a regular stop on ghost tours of New Orleans and attracts visitors who want to learn more about the property’s spine-chilling history.

The Basics
A 19th-century townhouse in the French Quarter, LaLaurie Mansion was home to the socialite, slave-owner, and killer Marie Delphine LaLaurie. According to local legend, when a fire broke out at the property during a party and local residents came to help put out the blaze, they found several instruments of torture, including iron chains and collars, which Madame LaLaurie used to punish and even murder her slaves. Some say the house is haunted by their ghosts.

The mansion is privately owned, and visitors are not permitted to go inside. Most people visit as part of a New Orleans walking tour or guided ghost tour, where guides tell the story of Madame LaLaurie along with tales of other dark happenings in the city.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The LaLaurie Mansion is not open to the public.
  • Nicolas Cage owned the house for several years in the early 2000s.
  • Visit at night for extra scare factor.
  • The tale of Madame LaLaurie was featured in the series American Horror Story: Coven.

How to Get There
The house is located at 1140 Royal St. in the French Quarter, on the corner of Governor Nicholls St. It is easily accessible on foot, as part of a guided walking tour, by taxi, or by bus (take line 5 or 55 to Decatur and Barracks).

When to Get There
LaLaurie Mansion is a private residence, so you can only look at the house from the outside. Walking tours visit the house daily.

Visit the St. Louis Cemetery
St. Louis Cemetery No.1 is a short walk from LaLaurie Mansion and is a fascinating place to explore. The oldest graveyard in New Orleans, people come here to see the tombs of some of NoLa's most famous residents, including voodoo queen Marie Laveau. Entry to the cemetery is restricted to those taking part in a prebooked walking tour.
Address: 1140 Royal Street, New Orleans, LA 70116, USA

Let's get lit and talk about ghosts! We will start out at a bar so everyone can get fueled up for our haunted French Quarter exploration. Drinks are not included, but there will be a total of three drink stops. We'll do a little introduction about ourselves and get to know our new drinking buddies. Then, I'll tell you about some of the most famous French Quarter hauntings: from vampires to ghosts. We'll even take pictures of a ghost that has his own table at a restaurant! You're going to leave with a much deeper understanding of the French Quarter (long as you don't have TOO many). We always have small groups, so you know you are getting a more personal experience! Halfway through, we'll conjure up some spirits (get drinks!) @ a FQ bar. After, we'll go to the famous Lalaurie Mansion! We even have a ghost meter to help us monitor paranormal activity along the way! The tour will end at Lafittes Blacksmith Shop, the oldest bar in the French Quarter, where we'll talk pirates.
