New Delhi National Gallery of Modern Art
Although the National Gallery is off the beaten track and not often visited by city tours, it’s worth stopping by if you love art and want to deepen your understanding of contemporary India. One of the most fascinating things about visiting the museum is seeing how modern art evolved in India compared to elsewhere. Don’t miss the collection of colorful paintings by Amrita Sher-Gil, a Hungarian-Indian painter known for her avant-garde works.

The National Gallery of Modern Art was founded in 1954 at Jaipur House, the former Delhi residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur. This sandstone structure features a large central dome and sprawling gardens and was designed by British architect Arthur Blomfield to blend in with the styling of surrounding Lutyens’ Delhi.
