La Mortella Gardens (Giardini La Mortella) Tours and Activities

Created in 1958 by Lady Susan Walton, La Mortella Gardens (Giardini La Mortella) were developed over the course of 50 years on the island of Ischia. Considered one of the most beautiful private gardens in Europe, it was built on land that was once covered in volcanic rocks. Today, the botanic gardens are divided into a valley garden and a hill garden, each with a distinct character. The hill garden features Mediterranean vegetation and architectural elements that reflect the history and archaeology of Ischia. It is dominated by the Greek Theater, an auditorium that was carved out of the slope of the mountain with a stage overlooking the Bay of Forio.

The valley garden is home to a wide variety of trees and flowers, including ginkgo biloba trees, magnolias, hydrangeas, tree ferns, geraniums, Brahea palms, yucca, aloe and water lilies. It also features 65-foot tall trees that produce yellow flowers similar to tulips. Also on the grounds is a house that includes a concert hall and museum where concerts are held on the weekends each fall and spring.

Ischia and La Mortella Gardens

Dominated by Mount Epomeo, Ischia is a beautiful island that neighbours Capri known as the green isle much bigger than Capri. You will see all the highlights as you go on a nice coach tour around the island. Time for lunch before reaching the subtropical La Mortella gardens. The gardens were created by English composer Sir William Walton and his wife who lived here from 1949. They feature more than 300 rare and exotic plants, along with ornate statues and waterfalls. La Mortella is divided into two parts: a lower garden, called The Valley, and an upper garden on The Hill, terraced with retaining walls. The many areas of the garden are linked by a network of walks, paths, ramps and steps that climb the dry walls allowing the visitors to reach the upper hill, where they can enjoy breathtaking views of the Bay of Forio.
