Dharavi

Dharavi, Mumbai, India

The Basics

Wander the narrow pathways between sheet iron structures in Dharavi to gain insight into the melting pot that is one of the world’s largest slums, home to many small-scale industries. While educational, a walk through the quarter may be overwhelming for outsiders, so it’s best to visit the slum with a local English-speaking guide who can highlight the experience with context and insight into daily life and show how residents use their ingenuity and creativity to reside in an otherwise challenging socioeconomic environment. Choose a private or small-group walking tour of the slum, or visit as part of a Mumbai sightseeing tour.

Dharavi, open for tours!
I was in Mumbai on business in mid-September 2021. Dharavi is one of the areas I wanted to visit and quickly found the tour through Viator. The company was super flexible and accommodating and soon I was met at the hotel by Samir with a ride. The walking tour itself took around 2 hours. I found the industriousness and community very worthwhile and certainly remember the tour as one of the highlights of my Mumbai visit. A must-see! As an aside, Samir was frequently sidelined by short conversations with the residents that were very interested in my presence. Apparently, I was the first tourist many had seen in 18 months and, indeed, Samir said I was his first tour in that long. Bottom line is they are looking forward to to more guests in their community. Do visit, and I highly recommend Viator and Samir.

Dharavi Small-Group Mumbai - Walking Tour with Guide and Optional Add-ons
AJ was the perfect guide, we learnt so much and we now have a better understanding . I was very reluctant to visit a “slum” , it felt wrong for many reasons. But for one thing this word doesn’t exist in Hindi. All Our preconceptions vanished, and we had a true insight into this fascinating community . I can honestly say that I felt safer there than on the streets in London or Paris. The people were very welcoming . Don’t miss the Dharavi handbag shop. Thank you AJ 😊🧡

Dharavi Slum Tour
Very interesting. Well planned by Mohamed and Shailinder who helped us arrive at the meeting point. I had misconceptions about Dharavi but the tour did a lot to dispel that. It was amazing to see the various work people inside Dharavi do ( Leather / recycling etc) Everyone was friendly and I felt completely safe. Highly recommended as it’s only a short 2 hour tour

How to Get There

Dharavi is situated in the northern suburbs of Mumbai between the Western and Central Railways lines. While it’s possible to visit the area independently, it’s quite easy to get lost in the maze of streets and narrow alleys, so it’s much safer to visit with a tour guide.

When to Get There

The most pleasant time to visit Dharavi Slum (and Mumbai as a whole) is during winter, from November to February, when the weather is mild and dry. Expect temperatures upwards of 100°F (38°C) in May, and frequent—sometimes continuous—rainfall during July and August monsoons.

A Note on the Ethics of Slum Tourism

We are sensitive to the issues and concerns surrounding slums, and we understand that tours of them may not be suitable for everyone. We strongly believe that these tours are educational and allow for a better understanding of Indian life inside Dharavi.
