Montreal

The Basics

Exploring Old Montreal is the best way to experience the city’s history, culture, and architecture. Myriad group and private tours are designed to introduce visitors to a combination of all three on foot, by bike, by scooter, or even from the air. Most city tours include time in Old Montreal, with tour guides providing context for and explanation of all the Canadian history within its walls. Choose a night tour if you prefer to explore after dark or a food tour to dive into the local food truck and craft beer scenes.

Great way to see Montreal

Guided Scooter Sightseeing Tour in Montreal
One of the highlights of our stay in Montreal. Scooters were easy to drive and a great way to get around the city. Our guide David was great – ensured our safety and was informative and engaging. We rode through the Mont Royal cemetery to a great lookout location over the city. One of our stops was at an iconic bagel shop. Hopefully, David will be your guide, but tour will be enjoyable no matter what.

Our guide Lesley was knowledgeable added personal stories to bring some of what we saw to life. She was professional, pleasant and made everyone feel comfortable. She managed the time and the different group needs well. Loved her tips and her the photos she shared on her iPad of the different seasons.

Winter Charms of Old Montreal - Small Group Walking Tour
Although we've been to Montreal before, we learned so much about the history of Old Montreal. Lesley is passionate and knowledgable about Old Montreal which made for a fun tour. She was extremely responsive prior to the tour and even followed up after the tour with additional suggestions and ideas for our visit. It was a nice way to spend a crisp, beautiful morning in Montreal! We highly recommend taking Lesley's tour of Old Montreal!

History Walking Tour of Old Montreal
Jean Michael was such a wonderful tour guide! His knowledge of Montreal was very impressive and he imparted that knowledge with warmth, humor, and compassion. We especially appreciated his acknowledgements of the contributions of Indigenous people and women...and also all his Celine Dion references. Could not recommend him and his tour more highly, we loved every minute!

Christmas Walking Tour in Old Montreal
Lovely lighting for the holidays on so many buildings- I would like to go for a more historical tour; to learn about the old buildings and have an opportunity to enter them….if possible.

Highlights of Old Montreal

The historic area’s pulsating center is Place Jacques-Cartier. From here, its center promenade slopes down from Rue Notre-Dame to the Old Port, lined with 18th-century stone buildings. At the base of the plaza are horse-drawn carriages, outdoor cafés, art galleries, and street performers. Nearby, you’ll find the Bonsecours Market, the oldest and largest public market in the city, and the stone Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel. West of Place Jacques-Cartier is the beautiful Place d’Armes, dominated by the Notre-Dame Basilica. The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and Museum of Archaeology and History are also worth visiting.
