The Basics

Haleakala sunrise tours are the most popular way to see the crater, offering a unique look amid the orange and red-colored dawn, and saving visitors the hassle of navigating to the volcano’s summit in the dark. Many Haleakala Crater tours include pre-arranged sunrise-viewing passes for Pu’u’ula’ula Summit, the highest point on Mt. Haleakala. Sunrise bike tours typically provide one-way bus transportation to the peak, allowing you to enjoy the view and then cycle down 6,500 feet (1,981 meters) to the ocean.

Aside from early morning visits, other tours dodge the pre-dawn crowds with daytime trips, guided hikes across the crater floor, or full-day excursions to the crater and other destinations within Haleakala National Park. You can also visit Haleakala Crater on a combo tour that also stops at other top Maui sites such as Iao Valley or the Road to Hana.

Cory, our guide, was excellent. Our trip was very enjoyable and well informed as a result. The Haleakala Sunrise tour was well thought out. Note that the Covid impacts availability of gloves....TAKE SOME!!! It's chilly up there at the top of the world.

East Maui 45-minute Helicopter Tour over Haleakala Crater
Excellent pilot who was very experienced. We had do direct due to weather and he couldn’t be any calmer. Especially tiff some of us who were a little anxious about the flight. Extremely helpful and accommodating staff. I highly recommend Air Maui.

Haleakala Maui Sunrise Tour with Breakfast
The sunrise at Haleakala was breathtaking. We were picked up right outside our hotel which made waking up around 2 am just a little easier. Even in June, it was about 45* at the top, so be sure to pack plenty of warm clothes!

We had a great time on the sunrise bike tour. I was really nervous about the biking part, but they did an excellent job of making sure we knew what to do and went above and beyond to make it a great, safe time. Highly recommend!

Awesome Views above the clouds

Haleakala Maui Sunset Tour with Dinner
Beautiful views as we rode to the summit above the clouds. Driver -Cama-was very knowledgeable and gave us lots of good information and took lots of fun pics for us. With the wind blowing at the summit at sunset it was very cold. I would highly recommend bringing gloves along - holding the phone or camera for any length of time was extremely cold on the hands.

Haleakala Maui Sunrise Tour with Breakfast
Seeing the sunrise from Haleakala was beautiful. Preston was informative and made the day easy for us. It’s a long day, but worth not having to make the drive ourselves. Definitely dress warm as it got really windy and cold.

Exploring Upcountry Maui

Upcountry Maui, the region around Mt. Haleakala, offers plenty to do after a sunrise crater tour. Head to the town of Kula to walk through lavender fields at Alii Kula Lavender Farm, stop by a Maui winery, or visit Hawaii Sea Spirits Organic Farm and Distillery, the makers of OCEAN Vodka. You can also seethe western-themed town of Makawao to enjoy some of the region’s best boutique shopping.
