Jemaa el-Fna (Djemaa el-Fna)

Djemaa el Fna, Marrakech

The Basics

Moroccans have been gathering in Jemaa el-Fna in Marrakech’s Medina (walled town) for almost 1,000 years. From the traditional storytellers who spin their yarns to rapt groups of locals to the snake charmers and the many food stalls selling traditional snail soup and sweet mint tea, a visit to the square—especially after dark—is a truly special experience.

The best ways to enjoy the square are to go with the flow and enjoy the different performances that spring up from place to place or to tour the area with a knowledgeable local guide who can take you to the most authentic spots.

A night in Marrakech

Experience Marrakech: Food and Market Tour of Djemaa El Fna, Including Traditional Dinner
Our guide met us at our hotel and we began our walking food tour. We ate a lot of local foods - donuts, peppermint tea, soup, tanjine, coffee, and saw the market at night. Personally I think it’s expensive for the food we ate. Our guide Jihad, was pleasant and knowledgeable about the area and customs.

Completely blew my mind! I wasnt expecting it to be THAT good. Ali took us on a journey of food I had not experienced before. Ali is the best guide I had while in Marrakech. So warm, humble and took care of us. He was so well versed in the Moroccan history in food, culture and religion. And answered our questions so thoroughly. He levitated our trip to Marrakech, we had plenty of laughs. Ali recommended places to buy spices, salts and teas, I've been back to those for some more as it was that good. I'm so happy I booked this tour, was so memorable for me and my husband. We will booking our next tour with Ali.

This tour was alot better than we thought it was going to be. Although be warned, biking through the crowds and narrow alleyways in the souks was very challenging but fun and we really enjoyed it! Younnes was a fantastic guide he kept us safe and gave us information about the city and the different foods which we tried along the way. He even went out of his way his way at the end of the tour to redirect us back to the Medina. Thanks for a great tour!

A tour through Marrakech’s busy market with introduction to Moroccan specialties. Great experience walking with a knowledgable guide, showing us through complex alleys only the local know. My mother does not speak English, but still had a great time with wonderful people to walk around the market. Thank you so much for the memorable experience Mohamed!

This was a perfect way to begin our trip. We tried such a variety of traditional food from olives to soups to tangina to snails and sweets! Our guide was full of great knowledge, tips and stories and did a great job integrating six Australians and Europeans with two of us and making it so much fun!

Fabulous few hours tasting and learning about the food of Morocco. Omar was a great guide and made sure that everyone was enjoying themselves. We tried pastries, savoury doughnuts, soup, snails and, of course, olives before a lovely dinner on a rooftop terrace. Go hungry is my advice, you won’t regret it. Very entertaining evening spent in the Médina

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The square is fun to visit at nighttime when the food stalls operate.

  • It can get very crowded, so keep an eye on your belongings.

  • If the square gets overwhelming, you can retreat for a mint tea in one of the rooftop cafes.

When to Get There

Activity in the square kicks off at sunset—during the day, there’s not much more than fruit stalls here. The best times to visit Marrakech are spring and fall, as the weather can be very hot in summer, with daytime temperatures of over 100°F (38°C) at times.

Go Shopping in the Souks

The lanes leading off from the northern side of Jemaa el-Fna head into the warren-like complex of Marrakech's souks, or markets. Here you’ll find everything from rugs and pottery to beauty products, leather goods, and more for sale at stalls crowded with piles of goods. The items make great souvenirs, and haggling over prices is common practice here and even expected, but once you’ve agreed to a price you will be expected to purchase.
