Marrakech, Morocco

The Basics

The vast mountain range is split into three main regions: the centrally located High Atlas, the Middle Atlas to the north, and the remote Anti Atlas, tucked away in the south. Easily reached from Marrakech, the High Atlas range draws many visitors, with hotels clustered around popular spots like the picturesque Ourika Valley, Ouirgane, and Imlil. It’s also home to the 13,671-foot (4,167-meter) Mount Toubkal, Morocco’s highest peak. For many, a stay in the High Atlas Mountains is a pit stop en route to Ouarzazate, the launch pad for camping tours and desert camel treks. Experience the grandeur of the Atlas Mountains on a day trip from Marrakech, which might include activities such as quad biking, hot air ballooning, or a visit to a Berber village.

Day Trip To Atlas Mountains and Three Valleys & Berber Villages from Marrakech
We have just recently been on this trip and had a fantastic time. Pick up was prompt from our hotel. Our tour guide Mohammed (Potatoe) was very professional and patient as we were a group of twelve including young children, he made the trip very enjoyable and looked after us. Lunch was delicious and the kids loved the camel rides.

The Atlas Mountains and 5 Valleys Day Trip from Marrakech with Berber Lunch
It really is a drive, but I enjoyed myself so much I am happy I took the trip. The food was great though only 2 choices. The hike in and out is somewhat strenuous but I'm 70 and had no problem. Just watch the stones as tripping is easy and if wet, sliding. Enjoy the trip. I really did.

Atlas Mountains and Three Valleys & Waterfalls with Camel ride Guided Day Trip
Awesome day!! Our driver, Kareem, and tour guide, Mohammed, were outstanding! Beautiful hike, amazing views, yummy lunch! Two suggestions- make the stops for tea, lunch, etc. more structured and ask guests if they want lunch and the cost ahead of time. Otherwise, fabulous experience you will not forget! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Day Trip To Atlas Mountains and Three Valleys & Berber Villages from Marrakech
Absolutely incredible tour and the value of couldn’t be beaten,Mohammed (Potatoes) was such a good and funny guide who brought us into Imlil where we did a bit of light hiking before getting traditional tanjine for lunch. We also got great views of the Agafay desert and went camel riding at Sunset.Absolute 10/10 and worth the money every day of the week.

Atlas Mountains Hot Air Balloon Ride from Marrakech with Berber Breakfast and Desert Camel Experience
Such an amazing, once in a lifetime experince. Our pilot was absolutely hilarious the whole time and full of jokes (unfortunately we didn’t catch his name but really appreciated the joke he made about losing his hair from the balloon flame!) Loved every single part. Even saw the stars and constellations in the night when we arrived. Would highly recommend this experince. Very friendly, professional and helpful staff. We even got two breakfasts (a special mention to the delicious croissants we got before the ride, we especially loved them!) Was definitely worth the very early start. Overall, one of the best experiences we had on the trip.

When to Get There

For most travelers, the best time for a trip into the Atlas Mountains is March through November. While summers can be hot, temperatures in the Atlas Mountains are cooler than in the Moroccan lowlands. Mountain snow is usual from mid-January to mid-February, making this an excellent time for skiing in North Africa. Note that some businesses will be closed during Ramadan.

Highlights of the Atlas Mountains

The Atlas Mountains are dotted with interesting places to explore. Azzaden Valley is a quieter alternative to neighboring Imlil Valley and a popular base for guided treks. Dades Gorge, famous for growing Damascus roses, is a favorite destination for climbers, hikers, and white-water rafters. The rivers of the Middle Atlas feed the beautiful Ouzoud Falls, while Ifrane, the gateway town of the region, looks right out of the French Alps.
