Hiking - Tajo del Abanico & Cueva del Gato - 14km - Moderate Level

Hiking - Tajo del Abanico & Cueva del Gato - 14km - Moderate Level

This walk takes us via the limestone gorge of the Tajo del Abanico "The Fan" and on through hillside landscapes to finish at a local beauty spot, the Cueva del Gato. We head out from Ronda, through holm oak woodland and to an isolated mediaeval cobblesone pathway. The pathway leads us into the Tajo del Abanico gorge where we find a low cave and the huge, fan-shaped rock which gives the gorge its name. We then head into the southwestern hills, crossing high open pastures and small mountain streams, with stunning views throughout. We descend to the valley of the Rio Guadiaro and on to the Cueva del Gato or "Cat Cave", named for the shape of the cave mouth in the mountain. A waterfall at the cave entrance flows all year round. Each day thousands of litres of crystal clear water exit the cave via the waterfall to create a stunning, blue water pool. There is time for optional refreshments near the cave before we return to Ronda in our minibus.

Hiking - Tajo del Abanico Circular - 10km - Easy Level

Hiking - Tajo del Abanico Circular - 10km - Easy Level

This is an easy, circular walk from the southern, old part of Ronda town. The Tajo del Abanico is a hidden gem - a limestone rock gorge which ends at a towering rock named “The Fan” due to its unusual shape, formed from many centuries of wind and rain erosion of the limestone rock cliffs. The route takes us down past farmland, olive groves and almond trees. We enter holm oak forest and drop down to cross a small stream. A short climb brings us to the remains of a mediaeval cobblestone pathway, now seemingly "in the middle of nowhere". The pathway leads us into the valley gorge, where we find a low cave and the huge, fan-shaped rock which gives the gorge its name. We return through the quiet valley and past beautiful rock formations to re-enter Ronda via one of its oldest districts, the Barrio San Francisco. Here we find a bustling plaza, the mediaeval Almocobar Gate and church of Espirtitu Santu.

Hiking - Montejaque to Ronda - 11km - Moderate Level

Hiking - Montejaque to Ronda - 11km - Moderate Level

This walk takes us from the small white village of Montejaque, nestled into a niche amongst rocky mountain peaks at the edge of the Sierra de Grazalema, to Ronda. We follow the original pathways that took villagers, drovers and their wares from the mountain village into the town in the days before cars, roads and railways. After a short tour of the village we exit via a stone “zigzag path”. This is a short, steep climb that takes us up into the mountains, past a small chapel and a hidden plateau. We continue through the hills, past huge agave cactus plants, olive groves and farms, with stunning views across the countryside. We climb to a viewpoint where Ronda’s position on top of a sheer rock wall lays before us, then drop down into the fertile valley below the town. We walk directly below the walls of the gorge and enjoy iconic views of the Puente Nuevo bridge, before climbing to our finish point in one of Ronda’s oldest districts, the Barrio San Francisco.

Hiking along the cliffs of the Maro - Cerro Gordo Natural Park

Hiking along the cliffs of the Maro - Cerro Gordo Natural Park

star-5
This circular hiking route will take us to visit the Natural Park of Maro - Cerro Gordo and its cliffs, which rise imposingly over the Mediterranean waters of the Alboran Sea. In other times, these mountains were home to bandits, their waters gave way to pirates and was the gateway to kingdoms rich by their lands, by their ancestral knowledge. On the path we will find an ancient watchtower, still today with its gaze fixed on the sea. The presence of mountain goats will accompany us on our steps, we will see hidden coves, we will even discover hidden tropical crops. We can also enjoy the pleasure of the sea, where we will have free time to recover energy and, whoever wishes, enjoy a bath on the beach. These waters are teeming with life too!

Hiking - Grazalema to Montejaque - 16km - Moderate Level

Hiking - Grazalema to Montejaque - 16km - Moderate Level

This walk takes us cross country between two white villages, exploring the varied terrain and landscape of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park. We begin in Grazalema, formerly one of the wealthiest, and thus grandest, of the rural white villages. It is beautifully well-kept and is one of the few which still holds an annual bull running festival. We exit the village via the old mediaeval cobblestone pathway, then head into the heart of the Grazalema Natural Park. This is an area of rocky mountain crags, karst valleys, and cork oak forest. We walk along mountain pathways and old drovers’ routes, through holm oak forests and along a river valley, enjoying a succession of beautiful views all the way. We finish in Montejaque, an old Berber village, set high in a rocky niche. Stop for optional refreshments in Montejaque and visit the mirador “viewpoint” at the top of the village, reputedly the site of an Arab fort…though nothing remains of it. Return to Ronda in our minibus.

Hiking - Cueva del Gato & Molino del Santo- 13km - Moderate Level

Hiking - Cueva del Gato & Molino del Santo- 13km - Moderate Level

This popular walk takes us through beautiful Andalucian countryside, via a local beauty spot and on to finish at the renowned Molino del Santo hotel restaurant. We leave Ronda down an old cobbled road beside the gorge and enjoy spectacular views up to the town on its clifftop plateau and the Puente Nuevo bridge. We then head out through open countryside towards the Guadiaro river and the Cueva del Gato or "Cat Cave", a local beauty spot named for the shape of the natural cave mouth. The mountain behind contains a network of water-filled tunnels and caverns. Each day thousands of litres of crystal clear water exit the cave via a waterfall to create a stunning, blue water pool. We continue a short distance to the small village of Benaojan estacion and the Molino del Santo hotel, where we can relax on the terrace for optional refreshments before returning to Ronda in our minibus. Or choose to stay at the hotel for a delicious, leisurely lunch and return to Ronda by train or taxi.

Hiking - Mr Hendersons Way - 17km - Challenging Level

Hiking - Mr Hendersons Way - 17km - Challenging Level

This walk takes the less travelled path from Ronda out to the Guadiaro river valley. It explores some of the most unspoilt and peaceful hillside landscapes before dropping sharply down to the Guadiaro river. We then follow a rocky path known as “Mr Henderson’s Way” which undulates above the river banks to Jimera Estacion, where we finish at a local bar. We head out from Ronda into the southwestern hills, crossing high open pastures and small mountain streams, enjoying stunning views throughout. We descend to the valley of the Guadiaro river and then join "Mr Hendersons' Way. This narrow rocky pathway follows above the river through a picturesque limestone gorge. It is named after the ambitious British financier of the Victorian railway project which cut through the mountains from Algeciras on the southern coast of Spain up to Granada. The railway line still winds through the bottom of the valley - not many trains run each day so they barely disturb the tranquil mountain atmosphere.

Hiking - Cartajima to Ronda - 13km - Moderate to Challenging level

Hiking - Cartajima to Ronda - 13km - Moderate to Challenging level

This walk takes us from the white village of Cartajima, perched above the chestnut tree-filled Genal valley, up over the craggy limestone mountains of the Serrania de Ronda, and down into Ronda town. A short drive takes us south from Ronda to Cartajima village, one of seven in the High Genal Valley which survives largely from the production of chestnuts. The trees fill the mountainsides and valleys as far as the eye can see and provide an ever-changing landscape through the year. From Cartajima we climb steadily up into the ridge of craggy limestone mountains which separate the Genal valley from Ronda. We pass interesting rock formations, old threshing circles, sections of ancient drovers' paths and walk below a sheer cliff, onto a large karst plain leading to a spectacular view over to Ronda. From here we descend steadily down into Ronda, entering the town through the southern district of the Barrio San Francisco. A cooling drink on the plaza makes a great reward for your efforts.

Hiking - Torrecilla Ascent - 16km - Challenging Level

Hiking - Torrecilla Ascent - 16km - Challenging Level

The mountain of Torrecilla is located at the heart of the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park and is the highest peak in Western Andalucia at 1,919m above sea level. This is a challenging hike but the views are amazing and you will feel like you are on top of the world. We drive from Ronda into the Sierra de las Nieves, taking us far from civilisation and into this protected region of unspoiled and dramatic limestone mountains. We begin walking in the pine-forested lower levels of the mountains and head up steeply, through areas of stony scrubland, dotted with isolated holm oaks, catching glimpses of Torrecilla in the distance. After an easier, flatter section, the final ascent is a steep but relatively short climb. From the top we can see for miles in every direction - south to the Costa del Sol, the Rock of Gibraltar and over the Mediterranean Sea, inland to the Sierra Nevada and back "home" to the Serrania de Ronda.

Caminito del Rey Guided Tour

Caminito del Rey Guided Tour

star-4.5
Restored in March 2015, Caminito del Rey, formerly a service road, has now become one of the main tourist destinations in the province of Malaga. The tour is guided, which makes a big difference as the guide explains the history and tells many anecdotes, making the journey very exciting and pleasant. The routes are 7.7 km and 10 km long, which make for approximately 3 hours of pure enjoyment in the beautiful Natural Park of the Gaitanes. The El Caminito de Rey hike is spectacular the whole way from the Count of Guadalhorce Reservoir to its end at El Chorro Dam. Placed in unique natural surroundings, the path stretches between two gorges, canyons, and a large valley, all along pathways or boardwalks. The route is linear, not circular, and it goes in one direction, downwards from the north to the south. Its beginning is in the Town of Ardales and the end in Álora. The route is almost 8 km long, and takes from 3-4 hours to be crossed.
