El Caminito del Rey Tours

El Caminito del Rey
One of Andalucia’s top attractions, El Caminito del Rey is a narrow hiking path known for its nearly 2-mile (3-km) stretch of man-made boardwalks and glass footbridges that hug the sides of sheer cliffs and hang over river gorges. The roughly 3-hour hike takes you on paths 350 feet above the Guadalhorce River, offering stunning views of the Gaitanes Canyon (Desfiladero de los Gaitanes).

The Basics
Once considered the world’s most dangerous hiking path, El Caminito del Rey was renovated in 2015 to make it safe for visitors and tourists. The extensive restoration replaced the trail’s old handrail-free, crumbling boardwalks with secure wood and steel paths. Adventurous travelers can visit independently, starting the walk at various access points along the almost 5-mile (8-km) route. Alternatively, you can hike the path with a variety of organized tours—both group and private options are available—which typically include round-trip transportation.

While the site is easiest to get to from Malagá, excursions also run from Granada, Seville, and other local towns. However you choose to visit, you’ll want to buy your admission tickets and reserve your start time online in advance to guarantee a hassle-free day. After hiking, visitors can also visit prehistoric caves and explore the Andalucian countryside.

Things to Know Before You Go
  • El Caminito del Rey is ideal for adventurous and outdoorsy travelers who have a head for heights.
  • Admission tickets must be booked in advance to guarantee entry. Tickets are not available at the path’s entrance or access points.
  • Children under 8 are not allowed to walk El Caminito del Rey.
  • Plan to spend between around three hours completing the full, linear route of El Caminito del Rey.
  • There are restaurants and bathrooms at both ends of the walkway, which are connected by a regular shuttle bus.
  • El Caminito del Rey isn’t suitable for strollers or wheelchairs.

How to Get There
El Caminito del Rey is accessible by both public transportation and private vehicle, but parking is limited. If driving from Malagá, take the A-357 to Ardales, follow signs for Los Embalses, and park at the restaurants. Alternatively, you can take the RENFE train to El Chorro, the path’s end point. Most visitors opt for the convenience of a guided tour that includes round-trip transportation.

When to Get There
El Caminito del Rey opens at 9:30am Tuesday through Sunday, except for December 24, 25, and 31, and January 1. However, on any other day, poor weather can force the path to close; you’ll want to check the forecast for rain before you visit. In the spring and summer, you’ll want to start the walk in the morning to avoid the hottest hours of the day.

The Desfiladero de los Gaitanes Natural Area

The Gaitanes Canyon, best known for El Caminito del Rey, is just one part of the wider Desfiladero de los Gaitanes Natural Area. Birdwatchers can visit the area to look for Bonelli’s and golden eagles, and avid hikers can tackle some of the area’s other, less-populated walking routes. On hot days, enjoy a dip at the Guadalhorce Reservoir.
