Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens
Overview
With more than 1,400 mammals, birds, and reptiles representing more than 270 species, the Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens is one of the world's best zoos. Visit to see and learn about animals from across the globe, ranging from elephants to chimpanzees to Komodo dragons, including roughly 60 endangered species.

The Basics
The Los Angeles Zoo is one of many attractions in sprawling Griffith Park. The grounds are organized by parts of the world, and many areas include animals that are not often seen in American zoos, including red uakaris (a red-face monkey indigenous to the Amazon river basin) and bat-eared foxes from Africa.

The zoo offers a variety of free educational talks throughout the day, and guests can opt to pay for additional experiences like giraffe feedings, behind-the-scenes tours, and even zoo sleepovers. You can get a discount on zoo tickets and other Los Angeles attractions with sightseeing passes like the Go Los Angeles Card.

Things to Know Before You Go
  • You’ll want to give yourself at least 3–4 hours to see all of the animals at this zoo; many families opt to spend most of the day here.
  • The zoo is quite big, and it can take quite a while to get from one end of the grounds to another, so plan ahead if you want to see keeper talks or animal demonstrations.
  • The zoo has restaurants, cafes, and gift shops as well as a number of bathrooms and picnic areas.
  • Every part of the zoo, except for the aviary, is wheelchair accessible; wheelchairs and strollers are available to rent.
How to Get There
The zoo is in the northeast corner of Griffith Park, which is north of downtown LA and Hollywood and south of Burbank. To reach the zoo, take I-5 to Zoo Drive. The zoo offers free parking, but on holidays and weekends you must pay to use the most convenient lots. You can also reach the zoo via public transportation by taking the 96 bus to the LA Zoo stop; on weekends, you can also take the Griffith Parkline, a shuttle that takes visitors all around the park.

When to Get There
The zoo is open every day from mid-morning to early evening. Animal feedings and encounters take place on a daily and weekly basis; check the schedule for dates and times. The weather in Los Angeles is temperate from fall to spring, and the zoo can get hot in the summer.

Griffith Park
Griffith Park is Los Angeles’ largest outdoor escape, offering more than 4,300 acres (1,744 hectares) of recreation. Join the locals and visitors who flock here on weekends and sunny days to take advantage of hiking and biking trails, visit the Travel Town Museum and the Autry Museum of the American West, go horseback riding, ride the merry-go-round, enjoy a concert at the Greek Theatre, and explore the skies at the Griffith Observatory.
