The Basics

Costa Rica’s Venado Caves extend for nearly 8,858 feet (2,700 meters), and with water dripping from the ceiling and flowing below, the caves have a mystical, almost otherworldly feel to them that is suited for the adventurous at heart. First discovered by native Guatuso people, the caves are estimated to be somewhere between 15 and 20 million years old. From La Fortuna, half-day tours are available.

Amazing tour and guide
The caves were amazing! And our guide was knowledgeable and tailored the tour to our physical limits and what we wanted to do. The tour size was small and personal.

Venado Caves Underground Experience from La Fortuna
My fiance and I were a bit nervous starting the trip, as there was a huge down pour the night before and we had to be evacuated from PA Fortuna waterfall. Anthony our guide immediatly put our worries to rest and let us know that he was experienced and all precautions had been met to go to the caves. The drive to the caves was a lot of fun. My fiance and I ended up getting a private tour and Anthony made sure we didn't miss a thing. This trip through the caves, following an underground river to a spectacular underground waterfall is not one to miss. Crawling around, exploring cavern to cavern, climbing ladders and even a little rock climbing, kept us pumped. The bats flying around was a very cool, yet a little spooky experience. Anthony was very knowledgeable about the geology of the cave and we learned a lot about the history of how Costa Rica became the way it is today. On the tour we were lucky to see a poison dart frog and even a sloth! I forgot my jacket in the van post tour and they returned it to my hotel later that evening. What an incredible experience!

Venado Caves
Arturo was brilliant so friendly, fun and informative!! The cave guide Henry was superb, made our time in the caves so fun. Please please go for it, and do the ‘birthing canal’ it’s super exciting! Cannot thank the guides enough for their expertise. What an amazing experience.. PURA VIDA!! The best part of this tour is the group sizes. We had the caves to ourselves! So much better than the huge groups we saw coming in and out. Felt so lucky to be apart of this tour compared to the others!!

Venado Caves Underground Experience from La Fortuna
This tour is absolutely worth it! This is my second time to Costa Rica and I’m so glad I booked this tour. The guide was funny, knowledgeable and very much knew what he was doing. He was engaging and played some pranks on my boyfriend so I was happy! Lol! The caves were incredible. The small crevices to crawl through were cool. I’ve explored many caves and I’ll say this was completely worth it for both of us. It was very wet but that made it all the more fun.

Venado Caves Underground Experience from La Fortuna
This is for those that like a challenge or like to challenge their fears. I had to face my closterphobia with the tunnels, some with very small openings. Also if you have squeezy around spiders, you will have to be brave. You will get wet, muddy and aphysical workout. I am a 45 YO old woman who struggles with weight, but made it. My 9 YO handled it like a champ.

Great guide! Newfound respect for nature!

Venado Caves Underground Experience from La Fortuna
We had an extraordinary experience with Minor, our guide. He was incredibly knowledgeable about the flora and fauna but also fully committed to conservation, which we deeply appreciated. We felt that his approach was all about respecting nature and taking only photos and leaving only footprints. It was non-exploitative and fully educational. Because of the pandemic, we were the only ones on the tour, so we in essence received a private tour for our family of 3. Very COVID safe. We gained a new respect for the environment. Minor was also warm, personable and conscientious. Definitely one of the highlights of our Costa Rica trip and highly, highly recommended to families!

Great experience! The tour guide Mirllana or Miryana was wonderful very knowledgeable.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Bring a waterproof camera and a change of clothes; you will get wet and muddy.

  • The caves’ rock formations have earned nicknames such as “papaya,” “altar,” “lion’s head,” and “coral” thanks to their unique shapes.

  • Because there are many confined spaces in the caves, this attraction is not recommended for those who have claustrophobia.

When to Get There

For those traveling to Costa Rica during the rainy season, a visit to Venado Caves makes for an appropriate excursion because it’s under cover, but visitors should still expect to get wet, of course. Tours are available throughout the day, with half-day tours from La Fortuna typically leaving in the morning.

La Fortuna Waterfall

La Fortuna Waterfall is located just outside Arenal Volcano National Park, roughly 10 minutes from the town of La Fortuna, where it cascades down the face of the dormant Chato volcano. At the bottom of the fall, visitors can swim in its clear waters. Some tours combine a stop at the waterfall with a visit to the caves.
