Old Synagogue (Stara Synagoga) Tours

star-2
1 Review
Old Synagogue (Stara Synagoga)
Built during the fifteenth century blending German and Bohemian Gothic architectural styles, the Old Synagogue (Stara Synagoga) is the oldest surviving synagogue in Poland. The structure was rebuilt in 1570 by Italian architect Mateo Gucci, who added a Renaissance aesthetic, and was subsequently renovated several times throughout the early twentieth century. During World War II, Germans took over the building and used it as a warehouse, during which time the furnishings and the ceiling were destroyed.

Jewish Quarter, Oskar Schindler's sites and Kraków under Nazi occupation

Jewish Quarter, Oskar Schindler's sites and Kraków under Nazi occupation

star-5
In the beginning we go to see the very well preserved medieval Jewish quarter in Kazimierz, with its most interesting, ancient streets: Meisselsa, Józefa and Szeroka. Having this background we go over the Wisła (Vistula) River to find out the history of the Closed Jewish District (ghetto) in Podgórze. We also see the remaining parts of the ghetto wall in a very striking "matsevah-like" shape. Then we visit the historical museum in the former Schindler's Factory in Zabłocie. The new (opened in 2010), interactive exhibition shows how Kraków looked like days before WWII started and how WWII affected its people. Finally we visit the area of the concentration and labour camp in Płaszów, the monument and a villa where infamous commandant SS-Hauptsturmführer Amon Goeth (Ralph Fiennes in the movie) used to live.

Private guided walking tour of Kazimierz, the former Jewish Quarter

Private guided walking tour of Kazimierz, the former Jewish Quarter

The former Jewish quarter in Kazimierz (district of Kraków) is one of the best preserved Jewish quarters in Europe. Kazimierz (name after Kazimierz the Great, the last Piast and one of the greatest rulers in Polish history) used to be an independent city and from 15th century, a flourishing centre of Jewish religion and culture. The policy of religious tolerance allowed diverse groups of Jewish refugees from all over Europe to come and settle in Poland. Kazimierz became a safe paradise, dominated with the Jews. Today, however very few Jews live in Kazimierz, the district plays role of the artistic centre of Krakow and lots of bars, cafes and Jewish style restaurants help to feel its atmosphere. Your guide will also help you to recognize some of the sights that appeared in the Oscars winning "Schindler's list" movie which was shot in this area.
