The Basics

Auschwitz-Birkenau tours take visitors through some of the 13 surviving prison blocks that now feature museum exhibitions, many dedicated to victims and displaying documentary photographs and historical artifacts. In addition the main camp, a much larger camp called Birkenau (or Auschwitz II) sits about 1.25 miles (2 kilometers) to the west. This site has been left almost exactly as it was when the Nazis abandoned it at the end of the war, complete with gas chamber ruins, and is also considered a part of the UNESCO-listed Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum. An official visitor’s center can be found at the entrance to Auschwitz I.

The two sites are often visited together on group or private tours from Krakow Old Town, available in a number of languages and generally including transport between the memorial areas, plus hotel pickup and drop-off or airport transfers. It's recommended that travelers allot about 90 minutes for each of the sites. A visit is also sometimes combined with a trip to the nearby Wieliczka Salt Mine.

Day Trip to Auschwitz-Birkenau and Wieliczka Salt Mine from Krakow including Lunch
Must compliment the driver, really professional and friendly and went out his way. The English tour guide at Auschwitz-Birkenau I want to compliment with how she conducted the tour. You could hear the respect for those who lost their lives. The English guide at Wieliczka Salt Mine was amazing and went out her way to explain the mine and its history. I highly recommend both tours and Mr Shuttle.

Hassle free way of visiting Auschwitz-Birkenau

Auschwitz-Birkenau Group Tour from Krakow
The Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial is an absolute must do when visiting Poland. However getting to Auschwitz-Birkenau from Krakow can be awkward unless you have your own car. Going by public transports requires a lot of transfers and takes a lot of time - especially during covid when there is reduced services. This tour takes the hassle out of it.

Auschwitz- Birkenau and Wieliczka Salt Mine in One Day
Don’t want to say too much about Auschwitz. If you are in Krakow you have to go. Tour picks you up at hotel and drops you back. The salt mines are wonderful and a must visit. They are not too crowded due to Covid so now is a must. And a got a little souvenir found on floor. Tour company very good. Would recommend.

Great Tour of Auschwitz!

Auschwitz Birkenau Transport and Guided Tour
Despite COVID-19 and mask requirements, the tour guide was great. Good explanations of the camp and what happened during the war. The tour only visited 4 buildings out of dozens of others at Auschwitz in about 2 hrs, so if you want to visit every one this tour may not be for you. That said, great overview in a limited timeframe.

Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum and Memorial Guided Tour from Krakow
This was an incredibly moving experience. Our guide was fantastic - extremely respectful, friendly and informative. There are plenty of social distancing measures in place at the museum, so there’s no need to be concerned about doing this tour during the COVID pandemic.

My 2 points of contract where veryfriendly. Unfortunately we went to Auschwitz in July during Covid so I felt a bit rushed w the tour. Pick ups and drop reliable. Provided lunch was sub par. The salt mine was interesting. Highly recommend anyone on this tour to be prepared for a lot of walking.

Good hotel pick up. mini bus was clean and comfortable. Tour was conducted as a larger group with headsets. All pretty good but you are herded along - it is a busy place. Evidently subject matter is not overly pleasant but nothing is left out.

How to Get There

Auschwitz-Birkenau is in Oswiecim, about 40 miles (65 kilometers) west of Krakow, from where most tours depart. A few tours are offered from Warsaw 196 miles (315 kilometers) away, although transport takes four hours. Both memorial sites have paid parking lots, and shuttles run between the two. Zakopane is located 80 miles (130 kilometers) south.

Insider Tip

This is a somber place to visit (to say the least), and appropriate solemnity and respect are required on museum grounds. Although you can arrive independently, guided Auschwitz tours can allow for better education and understanding, plus insight from a tour guide.
