Bay of Kotor

Kotor, Kotor Municipality, Montenegro

The Basics

Montenegro’s Bay of Kotor, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a common day-trip outing from Dubrovnik in Croatia. Organized tours from the Croatian resort town typically include round-trip road transport, boat rides out on the bay, and free time in the historic towns of Kotor, Buda, Purist, and Risen. For a more active day out, consider a hiking, biking, or stand-up paddle boarding tour of the bay.

Great guide
Our tour guide Ivan was great. We were on a full 46 person coach, but obviously the size of the vehicle depends on how many people have booked for the day. You get about 3hrs in Kotor, which is an ample amount of time.

Kotor Bay Day Trip from Dubrovnik with Boat Ride to Lady of the Rock
It was a great day and the beauty of the Bay supercedes it all. The only frustration is we spent about 1 .5 hours picking people up at different locations in the morning. Then another hour or so on the back end. Other than that the day is organized perfectly with enough time to do and see everything.

Full-Day Tour Bay of Kotor Perast Kotor and Budva small group from Dubrovnik
Great way to get the most out of a day trip to Montenegro. 3 beautiful locations each with different things to offer. The boat ride in Perast was lovely and Andrew the guide was very knowledgeable. Would certainly recommend booking this tour.

Kotor Bay Day Trip from Dubrovnik with Boat Ride to Lady of the Rock
What a great day! I so enjoyed the entire experience. Alex was the best guide and answered all my questions and discussed any area brought up. The border crossing was smooth both ways, which left me with more time to explore and enjoy the Bay of Kotor, Perast, Our Lady of the Rocks, etc. It was so peaceful and relaxing. Thanks, Alex, for a wonderful day.

Full-Day Tour Bay of Kotor Perast Kotor and Budva small group from Dubrovnik
We got what we expected, but we missed guiding in the towns we visited. Plenty of time to see the towns by ourselves, which was nice.

Private Kotor Bay Speed Boat Tour and Blue Cave Adventure
We had a great trip! Unfortunately the weather wasn’t the best so we weren’t able to go the grotto but instead we made some other stops and were able to explore the bay. Our driver was also great!

Semi-Submarine: Kotor Bay Panorama & Underwater Experience
Children will love this small submarine. Just my husband and my self were on this as was beginning of the day . The people were so pleasant , the driver gave us a full commentary as we went around the beautiful bay of Kotor. We did not see much as we went below as water a little murky . Good value for money and a very gentle trip.

Epic '25 Turns' Bike Descent with best views of Kotor Bay
We had a fantastic experience! My husband and I wound up being the only ones on our biking tour. From the start, Karolina and Diago were great at communicating about picked up. They let’s us go our desired pace, took pictures for us and answered any questions we had. They were fun and helpful. They gave great recommendations for lunch after our tour as well. Since we had such a fun experience in the morning, we actually booked paddle boarding at sunset with them in the evening. Both of these were active, nature loving type of tours. Not for those who want to hear a lot of commentary but more for those who want to enjoy the views and beauty that Montenegro has to offer. We aren’t always “tour” people and often go an explore on our own. We did the biking tour because it’s a fun way to see the views without being stuck in a car or on a bus! So glad we did. We even had a little issue with my husband leaving his wallet in the car and Diego got the msg straight away and hurried right back to us. Jeffrey is the owner and also very involved. One day, if we are blessed to come back again, we would certainly book more tours!

How to Get There

The town of Kotor is about 59 miles (95 kilometers) from Dubrovnik. If driving, factor in extra time for the border crossing. Kotor-bound buses depart from Dubrovnik’s main bus station. Without a car or the dedicated transport provided as part of an organized tour, traveling around the bay can be time-consuming, with only limited bus services available.

When to Get There

During the busy summer months, delays at the border are not uncommon. Depart early in the day to avoid long lines. Kotor can be crowded on days when multiple cruise ships dock at port, so check the cruise ship schedule in advance and plan your trip accordingly.

Highlights of the Bay

Climb to the top of the fortifications of Kotor’s medieval Old Town for views of the bay. Purist is known for its Venetian palazzos and architecture, while the seaside Erceg Novi offers a pretty waterfront promenade and a picturesque old town. Our Lady of the Rocks is a church-topped artificial island and Svelte Stefan is a former medieval fishing village turned luxury hotel connected to the mainland by a small strip of land.
