The Basics

Hanalei Bay offers almost every water sport imaginable and it is one of Kauai’s best places to learn how to surf. Opt for a private or small-group beginner surf lesson, or take a guided kayak or snorkeling tour. Most tours of Kauai’s North Shore include a visit to Hanalei Bay, and flightseeing tours of the island offer a bird’s eye view of the bay on the way to the Na Pali Coast.

Beautiful Natural Beauty & A Fun Trip!

Hanalei Bay Kayak & Snorkel Tour
Super knowledgeable tour guide who was born & raised in Kauai. He made sure to give us plenty of opportunities for photos & also sprinkled in some great history and fun facts! He was so in tune with the movement of the ocean and knew exactly where to have us go to avoid the huge waves/ getting flipped over or hurt. We had a great time & got a nice arm workout! While snorkeling we saw 2 sea turtles & lots of beautiful fish.

Best Time on and In the water during your stay on Kauai

Hanalei Bay Kayak & Snorkel Tour
Man oh man what's an amazing experience and time on the water. Our guild was so much fun, start off with a little training and some lessons about the Kayak. Getting and being on the water was everything. We learned some Hawaiian history. Once we got to the reef saw all the beautiful fish, but most importantly I saw a turtle! Which I truly desired. Lunch was made for us that was delicious and even got to taste some fresh coconut water

Hanalei Bay Kayak & Snorkel Tour
Kolo was a great tour guide! There were so many fish and I was able to see an octopus while snorkeling! I felt that my 10 year old daughter was safe throughout the duration of the tour. Luana was great as well and went above and beyond to assist us.

Hanalei Bay Kayak & Snorkel Tour
Despite the road closures schedule getting to Princeville, it was all worth it. The Kayak and Snorkel experience was fantastic. Kolo and La-a, the tour guides has shared a lot of information about the area. The underwater life and fishes etc. I have seen so many colorful fishes and turtles in our snorkeling which made it so enjoyable. My husband stated that this was his favorite tour among the 8 others I have scheduled visiting Maui and Kauai.

An awesome experience! Our favorite of our trip. We absolutely loved Chantz and La’akea. Learned so much about Hawaii and Hawaiian culture in addition to the activities.

Hanalei Bay Kayak & Snorkel Tour
Kolo and Lala were great guides. The beauty of the tour was amazing and they both shared wonderful history and legend of the mountains. The snorkelling near the reef was beautiful. Kolo and Lala took care of all the kayakers - no matter the skill level. We had a wonderful time.

Hanalei Bay Kayak & Snorkel Tour
Our kayak/snorkeling excursion was amazing and one of the highlights of our week on Kauai. Our guide, Kolo, was helpful, knowledgeable and added many personal touches, including information on fishes we might see, how to open a coconut, some words in Hawaiian, ukelele music on the beach during lunch and local history.

Our guide Kolo was the best! So entertaining! What wasn’t to like? Great river kayak trip that is doable for any age. Snorkeling was awesome. Loved his ukele playing during lunch. Will definitely go back!

When to Get There

The best time to visit Hanalei Bay is during Kauai’s dry season, which runs from April through October. The busiest season in Kauai is from November to March. High surf from mid-October through March may create strong currents and pounding waves, so check the surf advisories before entering the water during this time of year.

Hanalei Bay Surfing

Hanalei Bay has gentle waves from April through October that make it an ideal place to learn how to surf. Moreover, with plenty of sandy-bottomed spots, beginner surfers don’t have to worry about falling on rocks or a shallow reef. Many surf schools in the area cater to beginners and also offer lessons to intermediate and advanced surfers. The winter season is less safe for beginners but provides plenty of big swells for advanced surfers.
