Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine Tours

star-4.5
301 Reviews
Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine
Kamakura makes for a colorful  and cultural day trip from Tokyo. The small city has over 75 temples and shrines, the biggest and most famous of which is the Tsuragoaka Hachimangu Shrine.

The shrine was founded by Minamoto Yoriyoshi in 1063. Despite being a shinto shrine it's layout is that of a Japanese buddhist temple. Because of its extreme beauty it's a popular spot for weddings and for the year's first shrine visit, a practice called hatsumode. During the New Year holidays it draws over 2 million visitors.

The walk from the station to the shrine is beautiful and dramatic: a long wide street embellished by orange torii gates that leads from the waterfront through the entire city. In April and September archery on horseback is performed along this street. The best time to visit is early springtime when the cherry blossoms and azaleas burst into colorful bloom.
Address: 2-1-31 Yukinoshita, Kamakura, Kanagawa 248-8588, Japan
Hours: April-Sep: 5am-8:30pm; Oct-March: 6am-8:30pm

Kamakura and Eastern Kyoto with Lots of Temples and Shrines

Kamakura and Eastern Kyoto with Lots of Temples and Shrines

Kamakura is such a compact city that you can see the whole area within a day. One of the representative sight-seeing spots is Big Image of Buddha in Kotokuin temple. From there, you can travel almost all the famous temples for six hours. Many historical sites are covered in public transportation services. On the way to Hachimangu, we can enjoy shopping on KOMACHI street. While walking through the street, we can feel something different from the western culture. In this area, there are many valuable temples and shrines within a walk. So, we can visit many historical temples and shrines such as so-called hydrangea temple and bamboo grove temple. All these temples are located in calm environment, so you will feel like being in KAMAKURA ZEN Buddhism style. About 1 hour from JR Kita Kamakura station, we will visit the 2nd largest city YOKOHAMA. This time, we will stop over at China town in ISHIKAWA cho in Yokohama. We can enjoy a variety of Chinese cuisines for reasonable prices.

Samurai Photo Tours: A Fun Day Out Discovering Kamakura

Samurai Photo Tours: A Fun Day Out Discovering Kamakura

star-5
Hi, I’m Peter. I was born in England, but I’ve lived most of life in Japan. I would be delighted to show you around Kamakura, where I presently live, and share with you my knowledge and love of its fascinating history. Kamakura served as Japan’s de facto capital from 1185 – 1333. It's where the first shogun, Minamoto no Yoritomo, was born. The Kamakura Period is also the birthplace of Zen Buddhism and the samurai culture. I'll explain the history as we visit different temples and shrines, some of them dating back hundreds of years. In the course of our tour, I'll also talk about aspects of Japanese life, and can arrange a delicious lunch at a restaurant specialising in local cuisine. As a bonus, I’ll take souvenir photos of you – or help you take quality pictures of your own. The tour lasts 5 hours and you may select your starting time on the booking form. If you’re planning a trip to Japan, I strongly recommend you include Kamakura. There’s a lot to discover in this beautiful city!
