The Basics

Getting lost in the narrow streets and distinct quarters of the Old City is an essential Jerusalem experience, and feels like walking into a different time. Orthodox Jews pray at the Western Wall, priests and pilgrims stroll in the Christian Quarter, ancient homes dot the Armenian Quarter, and the Muslim Quarter pulsates with busy markets comprising a maze of tiny shops selling everything from falafel and fresh-fresh-squeezed pomegranate juice to head scarves and jewelry.

Many Jerusalem tours offer inclusive ways to see all of the top sights in one day with a variety of walking tours of the Old City tailored to different interests. An expert guide can help you gain a comprehensive understanding of the area, and to avoid cultural faux pas when visiting sacred religious sites.

Old and New Jerusalem Day Trip from Tel Aviv
This tour was fantastic and our guide, Itaman, was very knowledgeable and interesting to listen to. His enthusiasm was great. The tour provided a really comprehensive experience of the old city of Jerusalem and I loved visiting each quarter. The final stop at Yad Vashem was very moving.

Walking Tour: Highlights of the Old City of Jerusalem
LISTEN! This was the best tour I've ever been on. Not one of the best. THE BEST! Robby was great in every way. He was informative, he was funny. He even got my kids involved and they had a great time. I learned so much about Jerusalem. If I ever get to come back, and I hope I do, I'm only taking tours from Robby.

Walking Tour: Highlights of the Old City of Jerusalem
Robby is knowledgeable and entertaining. Even if you know Jerusalem, he'll show you some "hidden treasures" you might not have known about. There were times when his multilingual capabilities - Hebrew, Arabic, and English - came in useful. Well worthwhile.

Good tour but not the full package

Old and New Jerusalem Full-Day Tour
We were pleased with the tour itself. Got to see many places inside the old city. However the tour advertised visiting the new city as well and the Holocaust museum and that did not happen. They mentioned it was a Friday and due to sabbath / holy day it would be closed. So make sure you pick the right day as you may not get the full tour.

Nice tour, but be smart

Jerusalem Old & New Unforgettable Tour from Tel Aviv
Everything was nice, the guide was also very kind. The only thing that really isn't fair is that they have ripped us all of at the souvenir shop where the guide took us. The whole story "this store is authorized by ministry of tourism, we have 50% off" and all nonsense, just forget it. First they don't display prices anywhere, them when you ask them, everything is 3-5 dollars, and than when you come to the register they charge you 100 dollars for 5 bracelets. So avoid shopping there and bring your own lunch.

Even as a Jerusalem local, I learned something new on this tour

Walking Tour: Highlights of the Old City of Jerusalem
Really appreciated having a tour guide that spoke Arabic, Hebrew and English for my visit to the Old City. As a local, I appreciated Robby's ability to show me lesser known places and encounter new people in a city where I have lived for many years. The views of the Dome of the Rock from the Omariya boys schools were exceptional, as was shtrudel near the New Gate. Thanks for the experience.

Hava was awesome! We had a great time and got to see everything we wanted. Pick up and drop off were seamless. We leaned a lot about the history and faith of Jerusalem. Highlight of our trip!

How to Get There

The Old City of Jerusalem is accessible via the eight entry gates built into the walls around its perimeter. Many consider the Jaffa Gate to be the main entrance to the Old City. Private cars are not allowed inside the Old City, but taxis (found by Jaffa Gate) can take passengers inside. Public buses and the light rail stop within a 10-minute walk from the Old City, and there’s also a free shuttle to the Old City every 20 minutes from Jerusalem’s First Station.

When to Get There

The Old City is a year-round destination, with the quietest streets and mildest weather in May through October. Jerusalem in general can be very crowded and hot in the summer months; winter is chilly but crowds are thinner.

The Temple Mount

The raised stone plateau in Jerusalem’s Old City known as the Temple Mount is home to some of the most significant religious structures in the world, including the Dome of the Rock, the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and the Western Wall (the western support wall of the Temple Mount). The complex, which covers a 35-acre (14-hectare) area known as Al-Haram Al-Sharif, is a sacred place in Islam, Judaism, and Christianity, though it is controlled by the Islamic Trust, making the area a very contested location. The compound is open to visitors outside of prayer times, which change seasonally; check the schedule in advance. Entry is via the Moroccan Gate, near the Western Wall.
