Maligne Canyon

Jasper National Park, Jasper, Alberta, Canada

The Basics

During summer, Maligne Canyon is a popular hiking spot. Trails lead to footbridges that span the deepest sections of the canyon and offer views of waterfalls, fossils, and rock formations. Many guided summertime tours from Jasper make stops at the canyon, allowing visitors to explore independently or with a guide. Half-day and full-day summer tours often combine Maligne Canyon with other Canadian Rockies highlights, such as Medicine Lake, Maligne Lake, Athabasca Falls, and Miette Hot Springs.

In winter, Maligne Canyon ice-climbing tours and ice walks are scheduled, allowing visitors to tread—usually with waterproof winter boots and ice cleats—along the icy surface of the canyon floor, seeing frozen waterfalls, ice caves, and icicles.

Maligne Canyon Hiking Tour
Was a fabulous adventure. The canyon and racing waters were incredible. Really beautiful. Jeff, our guide was very personable and knowledgeable. It is mostly downhill so not a cardio workout but still challenging.

Jasper National Park Tour: Maligne Valley, Medicine Lake and Spirit Island
We had booked and arranged a pick up from our hotel. The company then asked us to phone to confirm the pick up location which we did. They then sent an email to say they would pick us up from a different location. The coach still called in to our hotel! The tour itself and our guide was amazing. Fred was full of fascinating facts and clearly new the area and wildlife. Apart from the mix up with pick up locations, the tour was excellent value for money.

Jasper Wildlife and Waterfalls Tour with Maligne Lake Hike
Guide had a lot of information. We were a little slow on the trail and guide slowed down for us. Lots of roots on trail. Not for people with walking issues.

Maligne Canyon Hiking Tour
This trip was all about our guide Annaja Davis. What a star. We were booked on the Maligne Canyon Hiking Tour but our previous days tour (with a different company) was necessarily adapted as the late spring made the advertised hike impossible, as a consequence we had already done 80% of the Canyon! Annaja could not have been more helpful or accommodating. Clearing it with her control, she took us off in the opposite direction and we had a great experience gently hiking the Valley of the Five Lakes. Friendly, informative and completely 'in tune' with our needs Annaja made our day. She simply could not have done any more to accommodate us. Wonderful experience and great advert for Canadian hospitality.
