On the western edge of Wyoming, in the Teton mountains, three ski resorts offer something for every kind of skier or snowboarder, whether expert or novice. The town of Jackson sits within the valley of Jackson Hole, where the most famous of the three resorts gets its name. Read on for details about each location.
Jackson Hole Mountain Resort
The biggest and best-known resort in the area, Jackson Hole attracts extreme skiers with its challenging terrain and steep pitch. It sits 12 miles (20 kilometers) north of Jackson in Teton Village, which acts as the mountain’s base area, and features 2,500 acres (1,011 hectares) with 14 lifts and more than 130 runs. Don’t let its hardcore reputation scare you away, though—the mountain has plenty of beginner and intermediate trails and is also known for its Aerial Tram, which whisks 100 people to the top of the mountain in 9 minutes.
Grand Targhee Resort
In the town of Alta, 45 miles (70 kilometers) north of Jackson, Grand Targhee Resort is located on the west side of the Teton Range and is known for its deep powder. With an average snowfall of 500 inches (1,270 centimeters) a year, it’s a powder hound’s dream mountain, home to 2,602 acres (1,052 hectares) and five lifts. Snowcat skiing is available for those who want to go out of bounds to explore unspoiled terrain.
Snow King Resort
Often called the “Town Hill,” Snow King Resort is located in the town of Jackson, making it popular with locals. It dates back to the 1930s and is Wyoming’s oldest ski resort, as well as the only one that offers night skiing. With 400 acres, three lifts, and 32 runs, it’s not a large resort but is a favorite for ski racers and also offers snow tubing for additional family fun.
