The Basics

It's possible to visit the Isle of Skye on a full-day tour from Inverness, stopping at sights such as Fort William, Glencoe, and Eilean Donan Castle along the way. To experience everything the island has to offer, spend a night or two on the island—multi-day tours from Edinburgh or Glasgow are popular options that will give you plenty of time to visit Portree, the island's largest town; take in the views from the Old Man of Storr; and explore top attractions such as the Faerie Glen, Dunvegan castle, and Kilt Rock.

Perfect trip for few days
If you want a great taster for Scotland - but only have a few days - this is the trip to take! The itinerary covered lots of ground without feeling too rushed - Highlands and Isle of Skye are spectacular ... the train ride IS worth it - especially if you bring a bit of whisky to enjoy with friends! Our guide Charlie was awesome ! Highly recommend this trip!

Isle of Skye Full Day 8-Seater Bus Tour from Inverness
Great day trip to see amazing Isle of Skye. The views are great, the castles breathtaking and the glens mesmerising. Portree, a small fishing village, is charming and the food in local restaurants is great. And our guide Drew was brilliant too!

It was one of the best experience we had in Scotland with a great tour operator Timberbush and great tour guide Martin. He is the best tour guide we ever experienced and his choice of places, historical knowledge, driving skill and above all song selections is exceptional and awesome. Highlands of Scotland is a beautiful place and this tour made a great memory with great experience.

Had a great day on this tour with our driver Drew who was very informative throughout the day. The scenery was lovely and we had many stops throughout the day and a lovely lunch from the Granary in the square at Portree in Skye.

The Ultimate Isle of Skye Day Tour from Inverness
Lovely day trip, beautiful views and photo stops. Entertained the whole way by guide Robert with his stories. If you can visit Skye for longer than well worth trying a few day trip but you can only spare 1 day than this is a good trip to see the essentials.

Isle of Skye Day Trip from Inverness
Rory was the best. We joined a 3 day trip for just the day to Skye and was made to feel welcome with the others on the bus. He had so much information about Skye and you could tell he really enjoys the place himself. Love his humor and how he shared a little about himself-makes the long day much more “intimate”. Our family of four thoroughly enjoyed this trip. We would certainly go on another. Wish we had booked the entire 3 day trip.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Prepare for unpredictable weather—it can get chilly along the coast even in summer and rain is always a possibility.

  • Pack some insect repellent—the Scottish Highlands are notorious for their midges, an insect similar to mosquitos.

  • Public transport is very limited on the Isle of Skye, so joining a tour is the best option for those without their own transport.

When to Get There

The best time to visit Skye Island is during the spring and summer months, when the weather is most favorable—although the midges are out in full force on warm evenings. The views can be spectacular in winter, especially if it’s been snowing, but access to some of the island's lookout points will be dependent on the weather.

Natural Wonders on the Isle of Skye

The island's natural wonders beg to be photographed, and hikers and road-trippers will find plenty of opportunities to escape the beaten track. Stroll along the sea cliffs at Neist Point, cool off with a swim in the Fairy Pools, hike into the Cuillin Mountains, or explore the rugged landscapes of the Quiraing.
