Minh Mang Tomb Tours and Activities

Contributing to Hue's imperial heritage is the Minh Mang Tomb, a 19th-century mausoleum set amid the lush landscapes of central Vietnam. The tomb, located 7 miles (12 kilometers) outside of Hue on the west bank of the Perfume River (Song Huong River), attracts visitors with more than 20 structures and its flower-lined walkways.

The Basics
A popular way to visit the Minh Mang Tomb is as part of a Hue sightseeing tour, which often include stops at the UNESCO-listed The Citadel (Da Noi), Thien Mu Pagoda, and Dong Ba Market as well. For the complete Hue experience, travelers can opt for a tour that includes a dragon boat ride on the Perfume River. Tours enrich a visitor’s experience by sharing significant historical information.

Things to Know Before You Go
  • The tomb is a must-see for history buffs and first-time visitors to Hue.
  • Wear comfortable shoes; the grounds of the tomb are extensive.
  • There is a small admission fee to visit the tomb.

How to Get There
Only a few signs identify this tomb, so it can be difficult to find. Hop a motor taxi or participate in a local historical tour to avoid the hassle of finding the Minh Mang Tomb on your own. The tomb is also accessible by dragon boat on the Perfume River.

When to Get There
Minh Mang Tomb is an important historical site, and it attracts a lot of visitors. Try to visit in the early morning before crowds arrive and the daytime heat reaches its peak. During rainy season, which spans from October through December, don’t forget your umbrella.

Who Was Minh Mang?
Minh Mang was the second ruler of the Nguyen Dynasty and governed south and central Vietnam from 1820 to 1840. The emperor commissioned his own tomb to have 40 structures, which were completed before his death, but unfortunately 20 were destroyed beyond repair during the Vietnam War.
