The Basics

The 2.5-square-mile (6.5-square-kilometer) West Lake is filled with sights to see, including the Ten Scenes of West Lake, a series of vistas around the water. First compiled during the Southern Song Dynasty, the Ten Scenes gained popularity under Emperor Kangxi during the Qing Dynasty, and include Viewing Fish at Flower Harbour and Moon Reflected on Three Ponds.

To see much of the lake in a short amount of time, rent bicycles, catch an electric cart, or take a leisurely boat cruise around the water. Allot several hours and consider combining a visit to West Lake with a tour of nearby attractions, such as Lingyin Temple and Qinghefang Ancient Street. Full-day tours, including day tours from Shanghai to West Lake, typically also include a visit to a nearby tea plantation. Choose a multi-day tour to gain in-depth insight into Hangzhou and its surrounding areas.

Really great way to explore the area in a short amount of time!
My boyfriend and I visited Hangzhou for the first time and only had 2 days. We spent the first day on this tour and Nancy was fantastic. She knew so much about the towns and was very personable. We learned a lot about the village and the stories, and Nancy was able to advise us for what to do for our second day as well.

Hangzhou: Heaven on Earth Day Trip from Shanghai including West Lake Cruise
We were very pleased with the excellent service from our guide Tom, he communicated well in English and provided an interesting commentary of this amazing area. The only issue was sitting in traffic for a couple of hours. Understand this is unavoidable in these huge cities, one must put up with the delays to China's beautiful countryside. Pleasantly surprised at the clean cities, roads and the huge tree planting taking place every where on can see.

This show was amazing, our guide collected us from our hotel and was informative and helpful. Bobby found us a nice place to eat and have coffee before hand. All of us found the show spectacular, and really appreciated the fact that altho we had booked it from New Zealand before we even left the country, the communication and service was faultless.

The full day tour is well planned and the tour was conducted in a relaxed mode. The tour guide Bonnie and the driver are both friendly. Bonnie is able to converse with the group in both Chinese and English which was helpful.

Hangzhou: Heaven on Earth Day Trip from Shanghai including West Lake Cruise
I really love meeting small villages and Im a tea lover, so I was very excited to visit a tea field. Unfortunately it wasn’t harvest season, but still was great to be there. Alina guided us through it all, including the temple, the lake and the boat trip, telling us about the history of the places and counting us the local legends and folkores.

Hangzhou Day Tour of West Lake, Lingyin Temple, Tea Village & Hefang Street
We were late for our arrival and the Viator team was FANTASTIC is being patient and finding us in a very crowded train station in Hangzhou. Our tour guide Bonnie had IMPECCABLE English and a sunny disposition that made our day delightful. She also was quite knowledgeable about local Hangzhou culture and current Alibaba information, which was quite fascinating. We would ask for Bonnie next time for sure!

Hangzhou: Heaven on Earth Day Trip from Shanghai including West Lake Cruise
The trip was very pleasant. The guide and the driver were excellent. Hangzhou is lovely place to spend a leisurely Sunday afternoon. But West Lake reminded me of other places I had seen. When time is limited it is a difficult question, what to see and what not to see. Four hours have to be spent in transit to see a lovely but not entirely unique lake.

Hangzhou Day Tour of West Lake, Lingyin Temple, Tea Village & Hefang Street
My family of four were taken around Hangzhou by David! He was articulate in his English, humorous and through when describing the different places we visited. I would highly recommend using Viator and asking for David on this tour or any other trip he might guide! Thank you.
