Halifax, the maritime capital of Nova Scotia, is the ideal starting point for many day trips around Canada’s second-smallest province. Here are our top picks for memorable day trips from Halifax, from which idyllic villages, wineries, and scenic ocean views are all just an easy jaunt away.

Peggy’s Cove — 27 miles (43 km) away
Situated on an inlet about 50 minutes from downtown Halifax is Peggy’s Cove, a quaint fishing village with an active lobster fleet. With its rustic houses, picturesque pier, and boulder-strewn coastline, Peggy’s Cove is undeniably charming. Its ace card is its red and white lighthouse, which stands atop a wave-battered boulder outcrop. Erected in 1915, this photogenic lighthouse has become a poster child for Canada’s Maritime Provinces, appearing prominently on tourist literature for the region. You can drive here or visit as part of a tour.

Mahone Bay — 54 miles (87 km) away
Farther south along the coast sits historic Mahone Bay, a former shipbuilding town. Photograph its trio of churches—St. James’ Anglican, St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran, and Trinity United—and take a boat ride out into the bay, which is scattered with more than 100 islands.

Lunenburg — 62 miles (100 km) away
South of Mahone Bay is brightly-painted Lunenburg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stroll the colorful waterfront or take a horse-drawn carriage ride through the historic streets. Being just an 85-minute drive from Halifax, Lunenburg is a convenient place to get a feel for small-town life in the Maritimes.

Annapolis Valley — about 100 miles (162 km) away
Spreading along the Bay of Fundy, the Annapolis Valley is one of Canada’s most fertile regions, with much of the land here used to grow edible and drinkable produce. Orchards carpet the landscape, as do wineries. If you want to taste the local wines, opt for a guided wine tour that includes transportation. The proximity to the Bay of Fundy, known for its scallops and lobster, means fresh shellfish abounds, making the area a particularly good choose for foodies.

Valley Wine Tour

Valley Wine Tour

Nova Scotia boasts some of the finest wineries in Canada. Known for its historic maritime climate, culture, fantastic beaches, the Bay of Fundy's record tides now add a great wine to that list. The earliest vines in Nova Scotia were planted around 1610 by Champlain's hard-working band of settlers. It was and still is great to relax to a glass of wine after a hard day's work. Today the wine industry in Nova Scotia has grown to become a proud addition to the province's economy. We will begin our tour with the narration of the areas of our intended sites. Our first visit will be at the Domaine de Grand Pre Winery, where we will spend about two hours exploring this site. We will spend the day investigating the various vineyards where you can take in the beauty and sample their unique offerings. This is a day that is spent outdoors so please dress appropriately for this tour. Walking shoes are ideal. We also offer private tours.

Bay of Fundy / Hall's Harbour

Bay of Fundy / Hall's Harbour

The Bay of Fundy's shape and prevailing ocean currents conspire to create the highest tides in the world. Experience what happens as 3,680 billion cubic feet of water pour in and out of the "funnel" not once but twice each day. Boats and even ocean-going ships can be stranded high and dry. Vast tidal flats are waiting to be explored. That's how Hall's Harbour began in 1779 - as a pirate base for local scalawag Samuel Hall, his native Mi'Kmaq girlfriend and a band of cutthroat Yankee privateers. They would prey on the Planters and Loyalists to the British Crown. Finally, remember that this is a real fishing village, one that takes its living from the sea - not one created to please tourists. The fishermen and other village folk are usually busy with their work, but you'll find that they will often take the time to pass time the with visitors to their community. Why not come and spend some time with us?
