Longji Rice Terraces

Longsheng, Guilin

The Basics

Here in Longji, in Longsheng county, layer upon layer of cultivated terraces stretch skyward on steep slopes—at some points they slope at over 50° angles. Despite the dramatic grades of the mountainside, however, traditional Chinese rice farmers have managed to sculpt the hillside into orderly terraces that annually yield massive harvests of rice.

When visiting the Longji Rice Terraces, you can walk among rural and traditional villages that still house ethnic minority people such as the Yao and Zhuang people. Most travelers visit as part of a guided day trip from Guilin; these self-guided, small-group, or private tours often include a visit to a Zhuang or Yao village, where women still grow very long hair in a traditional style.

Interesting Experience
Getting to the place requires some logistics, and having our guide take care of all of them, is a clear benefit, In addition, there are some explanations about rice growing and about the place. Unfortunately, we were not able to communicate with the local ethnic group. Our guide, was very open to share stories and answer questions about his life and the life of his friends and family, so we could get an insight to life in this region.

Longji rice terraces & minority villages private day tour
We had a very nice trip to the Longji rice terraces. Our guide Jackie picked us up punctually at our hotel lobby, and was telling us a lot about the region and life in China. At the destination, we did a little hike together and got to learn more about the history of the rice fields. Jackie was also very flexible in terms of what we wanted to see or dont see. 5/5 would book again!

One Day Private Longshen Rice Terraces Tour Including Lunch
The 500-year old rice fields are truly a work of beauty. They are also a working farm and means of support for the local farmers. We took this tour from Guilin with Leo as our guide. We visited just prior to the harvest time and so experienced the fields full of golden stocks. Walking through the fields is a must, not just looking from above.

One Day Private Longshen Rice Terraces Tour Including Lunch
We really enjoyed the tour. The guide was punctual, spoke very good English, did not rush and gave us time to take photos and even made many of us himself. He took care of great lunch and was willing to incorporate additional features in the tour (such as a tea plantation visit). Highly recommended choice.

When to Get There

Though there really isn’t a bad season to visit the Dragon’s Backbone. The early summer months of May and June are popular for photographers, as this is when the terraces are irrigated and cast a mirrored effect that crawls up the walls of the valleys.

Which Terraces to Visit

The Longji region is home to several picturesque rice paddies, the most famous of which are the terraced fields of Ping’an Village. Less touristed and perhaps more visually impressive are the fields at Jinkeng near Dazhai Village.
