Cong, Ireland

The Basics

Surrounded by lakes, forests, and streams, Cong is a charming village near Connemara best known as the location for the 1952 movie The Quiet Man. Visitors can head to the Quiet Man Museum, which includes an exact replica of the White O’Morn cottage from the movie; take walks through the surrounding countryside; do some boating on the nearby river; and enjoy the village’s small shops and cafes.

The village of Cong sits next to the 350-acre Ashford Castle estate, which was once owned by the Guinness family and is now home to one of the country’s best five-star hotels. Several day trips from Galway City and multi-day tours from Dublin include Cong and the surrounding region on their itineraries.

Connemara Day Trip from Galway: Cong and the Kylemore Abbey
Mike was our tour guide. He was great; he really knows how to spin a yarn. The Connemara mountains were magical. Mike provided great advice on how to explore the Abbey. Cong was slightly disappointing as the museum was closed.

Easy Tour Ride

Connemara Day Trip from Galway: Cong and the Kylemore Abbey
The bus ride was very easy going, and the driver was full of fun historical facts about The towns and of Ireland over all! We made a few stops along the way to the Kylemore Abbey to see some villages. We spent about two hours total at the abbey, but I would have enjoyed having another whole hour to really take my time at the abbey. All in all, it was a lovely experience!

Connemara Day Trip from Galway: Cong and the Kylemore Abbey
Really good tour! I had Tommy as my driver and he was very likable and knowledgeable. I wish we had more time in Cong as Cong had a beautiful wooded area. 2.5 hours is a good amount for Kylemore Abbey, but I wish we had slightly more time as well to explore the trails. The drive is gorgeous. Connemara is beautiful and seeing the landscape of my ancestors was amazing. I really recommend!

Connemara Day Trip from Galway: Cong and the Kylemore Abbey
This was a great day trip. We enjoyed every stop and the journey in between. The bus was comfortable and the driver was very entertaining. We did a self drive tour of Ireland, so it was nice to sit back for a day and let someone else do the driving.

Beautiful scenery, Kylemore Abbey was spectacular. Mike our bus driver was hilarious, even before we boarded the bus. He was very knowledgable and told stories on the drive and pointed out sights along the way.

Visiting Kylemore Abbey was the highlight but the smaller stops are easy to appreciate too! Be sure to dress for rain though!

Connemara Day Trip from Galway: Cong and the Kylemore Abbey
Nice day overall and the places seen/visited are great but it’s a lot of bus, and the shock absorber are not ideal which makes it a bit bumpy. The driver was nice and the comments were interesting.

Connemara Day Trip from Galway: Cong and the Kylemore Abbey
We just came back from the Kylemore abbey tour from Galway and loved it! Mike, the tour guide, is an authentic national treasure. He gave lots of information, details and excellent jokes, and with him the tour was a true pleasure. He solved all our doubts and questions. Please give him a rise! He deserves it :)

Connemara Day Trip from Galway: Cong and the Kylemore Abbey
The most amazing driver, funny, witty and with so much history and folklore knowledge. The landscapes were incredible, a place of surreal peace and beauty. Kylemore Abbey is unbelievable. Made me feel like a princess of times gone by.
