Pitti Palace Palatine Gallery

Piazza Pitti 1, Firenze, Italy

The Basics

Palazzo Pitti was home to Florence’s Medici family for centuries, and today the palace’s rooms and halls form a sumptuous backdrop for the Renaissance and baroque paintings and frescoes in the Palatine Gallery (Galleria Palatina), formerly the private collection of the Grand Duke. Laid out according to the Grand Duke’s personal tastes rather than by painting school or chronological order, the gallery was opened to visitors in 1828 by Leopold I of Lorraine.

Though less well-known than Florence’s Uffizi Gallery (Galleria degli Uffizi) or Accademia Gallery (Galleria dell'Accademia), the Palatine Gallery matches both in importance and beauty, and is best visited with an expert tour guide who can concentrate on the most significant works from the hundreds on display. Most guided tours of Pitti Palace include a visit to the gallery along with the Royal Apartments, the Gallery of Modern Art, and the Boboli Gardens.

Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens Private Tour
Eleonora was fantastic. Best guide in my whole trip. She was incredibly knowledgeable about art, art history, history in general she made the 3 hours fly by. She focused on the interesting art pieces. Can’t say enough good things. Recommend highly. And her English is excellent. She is also a really nice person.

Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens Private Tour
The garden itself is not very beautiful. Although it is a very good spot to get photos with the Duomo and Giotto's bell tower in the background, along with the Baptistry. I would have liked to have spent more time with the paintings inside the palace. Our guide, Elenora, was very knowledgeable with the history.

Pitti Palace - Private Tour At Galleria Palatina Incl. Tkts To Boboli Gardens
Elizabet was our tour guide for the Pitti Place, and she was fabulous. I have been to the Pitti Palace before, but the insights and background she offered were entertaining, interesting, and informative. She was thoughtful, detailed, and genuinely interested in our experience. She took special care with my companion who had a broken foot, ensuring that we could get to see the Boboli Gardens without climbing steps.

Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens Private Tour
For our first trip to Florence, we chose a private, early morning, guided tour of the Baboli Gardens and the Pitti Palace. This was a highlight of our trip! Our guide was so pleasant and knowledgeable! Florence was so crowded, but with the early access, we enjoyed the gardens and the palace with no crowd at all. Definitely worth the money!

When to Get There

The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday 8:15am to 6:50pm. Florence, the capital of Tuscany, is one of the most popular destinations in Italy, so its sights and museums can be very crowded in the summer. Schedule a visit to the Palatine Gallery in spring or fall, if possible, and avoid the first Sunday of the month, when the museum is free and particularly packed.
