Rosslyn Chapel

Chapel Loan, Edinburgh

The Basics

Rosslyn Chapel is a popular day trip from Edinburgh. Organized day tours often venture south from Edinburgh, stopping at Rosslyn Chapel, Melrose Abbey in the Scottish Borders, and—in some instances—at Hadrian’s Wall across the border in England. Other organized tours plot courses north from Rosslyn Chapel, making stops at Stirling Castle, the National Wallace Monument, and Dunfermline Abbey (the burial place of Robert the Bruce). Other day tours to Rosslyn Chapel stick to historic sites in and around Scotland’s capital, such as the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle, and Glenkinchie Distillery.

The modern, on-site visitor center at Rosslyn Chapel helps day-trippers decode the enigmatic carvings using interactive displays, as do the informative talks, which take place at the chapel several times daily.

A wonderful day among the ruins
Keith was simply a wonderful tour guide! From the start of the tour he made us feel welcome and he answered all of our random questions along the way. His knowledge of the area and its history were captivating. The wee bus is a great size. Just the right size to comfortably fit 15 people. There was plenty of time to explore Roslyn’s Chapel and Hadrian’s wall. We stopped in Melrose and has plenty of time to enjoy a lovely sit down lunch. A perfect day from start to finish!

Rosslyn Chapel and Scottish Borders Small-Group Day Tour from Edinburgh
Nick, our tour guide, was brilliant. Informative, witty, patient and a joy to spend the day with. My wife and our three adult children (24,21,19) enjoyed our trip out to Rosslyn Chapel. The small tour (max of 16) was key for us.

Tour with Some Nice Surprises

Rosslyn Chapel and Hadrian's Wall Small Group Day Tour from Edinburgh
We were most looking forward to the Hadrian’s Wall experience, but Rosslyn Chapel blew us away with its detailed and unique architecture. Melrose was a wonderfully quaint and picturesque town where we enjoyed a delightful Scottish lunch (from The Bakehouse - check it out!). And Hadrian’s Wall/Housesteads Roman Fort did NOT disappoint! One more thing: the Scottish countryside, coming and going, was beautiful. Great experience!

Rosslyn Chapel and Scottish Borders Small-Group Day Tour from Edinburgh
Rosslyn Chapel is a must see if you have an extra day in your trip. The borders were a wonderful contrast to seeing the highlands a day earlier. Catty was a wonderful guide and told great stories — incredibly educational. And we figured out the drop off and pickup spot are right next to the Waverly train station so you can hop right on after if you need to head somewhere (in our case the evening train to London after a cancelled flight).

Rosslyn Chapel, Dunfermline Abbey and Stirling Castle Day Tour from Edinburgh
Stephen B was personable and courteous all The way round. We felt safe, clean & comfortable in the tour coach. We were on time and had plenty of time for photos and exploration. Our only concern was the added fees for attractions. Easier if they were itemized into the tour fees. I will definitely recommend the tour to friends and family.

Rosslyn Chapel and Hadrian's Wall Small Group Day Tour from Edinburgh
This was a nice drive full of great scenic views. Just be aware, the cost does not include the abbeys and Hadrian's Wall center. If you have a Historic Scotland Membership, you can use it to get into Melrose Abbey for free and you also get discounts at the shops. You also get a discount at the Hadrian's Wall because it's an English Heritage site..

The Carvings at Rosslyn Chapel

Rosslyn Chapel’s intricate carvings are the its star attraction, and have spurred many theories regarding their meaning. The carvings feature flowers and biblical scenes, tsymbols supposedly associated with the Freemasons and the Knights Templar, and mysterious native American plants that were made before Colombus’ discovery of the New World. Some posit that the Knights of Templar hid in parts of the chapel and that its vaults may hold the Holy Grail or even the body of Christ.
